Planning your map
Before we begin building, we must first plan it out. Single-player maps are heavily story-driven, so as you think about your map, you should also be thinking about ways that you can hint at the story. For example, a level that takes place in a medieval castle illuminated only by old lanterns paints a clear picture of the time, place, and theme of the game. Another important aspect to consider when planning the first game level is the FTUE. Having a good FTUE ensures that the player remains engaged and does not get confused, resulting in them leaving the game. The FTUE usually runs the players through the first level and gives them an opportunity to get familiar with the different aspects of the game. With all of these points in mind, let’s look at how we can do it.
