Description

Cloud teams and ICT cost controllers working with Azure will be able to put their knowledge to work with this practical guide, introducing a process model for structured cost governance. The Road to Azure Cost Governance is a must-read if you find yourself facing the harsh reality of monthly cloud costs gradually getting out of control. Starting with how resources are created and managed, everything you need to know in order to track, display, optimize, rightsize, and clean up cloud resources will be tackled with a workflow approach that will leave the choice of operation to you (be it the Azure CLI, automation, logic apps, or even custom code). Using real-world datasets, you'll learn everything from basic cost management to modeling your cloud spend across your technical resources in a sustainable way. The book will also show you how to create a recursive optimization process that will give you full control of spending and savings, while helping you reserve budget for future cloud projects and innovation. By the end of this Azure book, you'll have a clear understanding and control of your cloud spend along with knowledge of a number of cost-saving techniques used by companies around the world, application optimization patterns, and the carbon impact of your cloud infrastructure.

ConclusionThis book aims to help you reduce your Azure costs, and undoubtedly succeeds. The topic is important to both bill payers and the planet. Many options are provided for reducing your Azure bill, focusing on right-sizing, cleanup, and reservations. The book is generally easy to read, with useful discussions, diagrams, example workflows, and links for further information. Some of the initial chapters, might feel a bit dry to a technologist, but stick with it, they provide useful background for the core middle chapters. Some of the links between topics within a chapter could have been smoother, especially Chapter 7.I would have liked to have seen discussion of serverless technology, spot pricing, elastic and instance pools, the use of sqlAssessment.exe to right-size an on-premise SQL Server ready for the cloud. That said, these are mostly minor concerns, and the core topics have been covered. Perhaps the biggest disappointment for me, was insufficient depth on database/query optimization.Probably the biggest change for people moving from on-premise to the cloud, is adopting a dynamic cloud mindset, where you can, and should, resize your resources regularly to save money. The book deserves a wide audience, all Azure bill payers should buy this book. It should pay for itself relatively quickly. The book needs a catchier title, such as “How To Reduce Your Azure Costs”

If you are looking for a book that starts from your basic billing and ramps up to the more complex architectural considerations, this is the perfect read. The writers have a very thorough understanding of the cost constraints of any company using public cloud services (starting with Azure, but many of the suggestions can easily apply to AWS or GCP) and guide you across every possible type of waste to build a fully operational cost governance process. Highly recommended!

I have been in this industry for many years, and rarely do I come across people who understand complex systems so well. The subject matter may not appear exciting but it underpins the drive to Net Zero. Using cost as a proxy measure for carbon means what you learn from this book means you effect people, planet and profit.

I highly recommended this book to Cost approvers, Admins, Architects , Solution Architects and Data Scientists focused on building robust solutions in Azure. Books covers deeper aspects of design patterns, architectures and frameworks optimized for cost and efficiency by setting proper subscription hierarchy, implementing monitoring and controls, organizing cloud resources and cleaning unused services.Right Sizing (ch-4), Cleanup (ch-5) and Reservations(ch-6) stood out having effective practices and solutions for cost effectiveness with good design. These chapters could be read individually for immediate workout.

Cost governance in Azure is a complicated task. This book proposes to face it in a rather didactic way. Whether they're just getting started with Azure or already have workloads running there, the planning process for billing, budgeting, and cost monitoring gives users a clear view of how to manage it. Section 2, Cost Savings, is going to be very interesting for everyone, because with the examples it brings and the various aspects of savings, you will be able to make great improvements (or face in a good way) their investments in the cloud.
