Creating Bumpy Surfaces with Displacement Maps
In this chapter, we will learn about Displacement maps. We will first learn about how Displacement maps work and how they can be beneficial, before learning to create and apply them to 3D models in Blender.
Displacement maps will help us improve models and increase the overall level of realism. We will also learn two different ways to create Displacement maps, which will allow us to create them from existing textures, as well as to procedurally generate them inside Blender to create special organic objects and surfaces. This gives us more freedom to create different shapes and meshes with special effects.
By the end of this chapter, you will have a good understanding of how Displacement maps work and how they can be used to create custom, highly realistic surfaces.
The following topics will be covered in this chapter:
- Understanding Displacement maps
- Generating a Displacement map in GIMP
- Applying Displacement maps...
