What is Linux?
Linux is a Unix-like operating system that has been developed by the open source movement to provide free and open source software. The key component is the Linux kernel. This was first released in the very early 1990s. I was still at school when this first form of Linux was released. It's creator was Linus Torvalds. Today, there are many flavors of Linux, and we can take a look at some of the different flavors available in Azure later in this chapter.
In the Microsoft Azure gallery of virtual machines, you can choose your Linux server from a number of options:
- Ubuntu
- CoreOS
- CentOS-based
- SUSE
- Oracle
Ubuntu
Ubuntu is a Linux-based operating system with Unity as its default desktop environment. It is based on free software and named after the Southern African philosophy of Ubuntu , which is often translated as "humanity toward others" or "the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity."
