Introduction

The saying goes "You can't tell a book by its cover" but there's a lot to be said about the way "packaging" affects perception. In this chapter, we will explore several creative ways for packaging your writing. Many of the recipes use journals in ways you might not expect.

The saying goes "You can't tell a book by its cover" but there's a lot to be said about the way "packaging" affects perception. In this chapter, we will explore several creative ways for packaging your writing. Many of the recipes use journals in ways you might not expect.

Mahara allows the creation of an unlimited number of journals, and journals can be used for a variety of purposes. The advantage of using a journal for reflections on artifacts, and for simply creating artifacts of writing, is the ability to use and reuse a single post, a group of posts, or an entire journal, for many different types of Pages. And, if you delete the Pages, your writing will still be saved in your journal. This is not the case with adding writing to a Page using a textbox; if you delete the Page, the textbox and all it contains is deleted as well. Additionally, the text in a textbox cannot be repurposed.

Nevertheless, there are times when textboxes in Pages are the perfect venue for your writing...

Uploading a group of documents, and sharing them using the Secret URL

We're going to imagine we've developed a series of lesson plans that a colleague in another school would like to use. With this recipe, we will upload the series of lesson plans (documents) and then share them using the Secret URL. The following screenshot is what your colleague will see:

Getting ready

It is best to begin by putting all of the documents you will be uploading into one folder.

How to do it...

  1. 1. Select the Content tab, and then Files.

  2. 2. In the box labeled Create folder type the name of the folder you wish to create for this recipe. Our example is called: Lesson Plans.

  3. 3. Select the button labeled Create folder.

  4. 4. Your new folder will appear in the list of folders under Home.

  5. 5. To add our files, we will first need to open this new folder. To do so, click on the name of the folder.

  6. 6. Now that we are in the folder, let's put a checkmark in the little box next to Upload file this certifies that you have the right...

A "Thought a Day" journal

With this recipe, we will use a journal to create a Daily Reflection book-like journal. Wow, that's a mouthful, but this is an easy recipe, and the following screenshot shows how it might look when we're all done:

How to do it...

Establish a journal for daily journaling:

  1. 1. On the Content tab, select Journals.

  2. 2. Select the button labeled Create Journal.

  3. 3. Give the journal a title. The example uses "A Thought a Day". Give the journal a short description and Tags, if you want.

  4. 4. Select Create Journal. You will be taken back to the Journals section of Content. Your new journal will be listed there.

  5. 5. Select the button labeled New Entry, and begin your first entry in your new journal by giving this entry a Title.

  6. 6. Type your entry in the Body, using the options in the HTML toolbar to select the fonts you wish to use.

  7. 7. Click on Save Entry.

The journal now exists, but no one can read it except you. Let's add it to a Page, so that it can be shared with others.

To create...

A page of writing samples

With this recipe, we will create a delicious looking Page of writing samples, sure to make a viewer explore further. The following screenshot is an example of the same:

Getting ready

If your writing samples are not already in your portfolio, create a folder in the Files section of the Content tab and upload the documents you wish to use.

Optional: If you are able, make a zipped folder containing all of the documents as well, and upload the zipped folder to your Files section. You will have to create the zipped folder on your computer as Mahara does not currently provide a way to do that.

Note

How to compress (.zip) a folder

To make a zipped folder of all your documents, you will need to have a folder somewhere in your computer that contains all of the documents. If you have not kept a copy of the documents on your computer (in other words: the only copies are on Mahara) then you will need to create a folder on your computer, download the documents from Mahara, and save...

A poetry chapbook

As you've already seen, there are a number of ways that artifacts can be stored and shared in Mahara. In this recipe, we will create a poetry chapbook (which is simply a small book) using the poetry pages you may have created using the previous recipe.

Note

Though the term chapbook usually refers to a pocket-sized book, we're kind of going to stretch the meaning a bit here when we refer to this digital book with a style similar to a paperback poetry book you might find in a local bookstore.

Getting ready

Using the recipe for poetry pages (earlier in this chapter), create all the Pages (pages) of your chapbook; you'll need to group them into a collection (a little like bookbinding). Then, we will create a cover page and table of contents. We'll use the built-in navigation for Collections, but the There's more... section will provide you with the option of creating links at the bottom of each page to take readers through the book page-by-page.

Let's begin and create our collection...

Thesis/research planning

Using the planning tool in Mahara, we will build a project plan and then send it to an advisor for feedback.

Getting ready

For Advisors/Instructors: To facilitate submissions, you will want to create a Course Group. This will provide a quick and easy way for you to view and comment on your advisees' plans. It also provides an easy way for students to submit the plans to you and allow you to follow their progress.

How to do it...

  1. 1. Select Plans on the Content tab.

  2. 2. Select the button labeled New Plan.

  3. 3. Give the plan a Title and a Description. These should reflect what the plan is for.

  4. 4. Click on Save plan.

  5. 5. Select New Task.

  6. 6. Give this task a title, for example: Determine topic of research.

  7. 7. Select a Completion date for this task by clicking on the small calendar icon next to the area for the date. You can use the small arrows to scroll through the various months and years, or you can click and hold your mouse down on the small arrows to pull up drop-down menus...

Language acquisition journal

Journals are wonderful tools for developing metacognition, that is, knowing about our own learning and thinking. Using a journal in the process of learning a new language, can provide you with the means to reflect on your own progress, and provide evidence of growth over time. The journals can also provide artifacts of learning that can be repurposed. For example, you may wish to apply for a job that requires the ability to learn other languages and respect cultural differences; selections from your journal could provide your potential employer with examples of how you work through a new language and your understanding of the cultures in which the language is spoken.

Getting ready

Download and install Audacity from the website http://audacity.sourceforge.net. You will also need to download and install the LAME MP3 Encoder (there is a link for this on the download page for Audacity). Make sure you remember where you save the LAME file, as you will need to find...

A Daily Gazette (Journalism page)

In this recipe, we are going to create a little newspaper. With a couple of RSS Feeds from outside sources, and regular postings in a couple of your own journals, you will have a "newspaper" with frequently updated content. The following screenshot shows how this would look:

Getting ready

You will need to have two journals in which you will regularly post the news you wish to be a part of your Gazette. The text in these journals should be fully justified that is the text is aligned on the left and the right. It would be a good idea for the journals to have specific themes, but they don't have to.

Note

By using journals for your stories, the stories will become part of your permanent portfolio, and an archive of news articles will be created automatically in your Gazette as well. If you were to simply use Text Box blocks for your stories, then every time you changed the story in the Text Box, you'd lose the story you had before.

How to do it...

  1. 1. In the Pages...

Unlike some technical books out there, which are just how to use an application, this book provides the user a rich suite of recipes for practical use of Mahara. The book is broken down into chapters about:- The Visual Arts- Literature and Writing- The Professional Portfolio- The Primary Education Portfolio- The Social Portfolio- The College application Portfolio- Certification and Accreditation Portfolio for Higher EducationHowever, most of the recipes provided could be used in many situations so you can read the book as a whole or just dive in to the particular examples that are of interest. So rather than go through the book chapter by chapter, I am going to cover a few of the example recipes provided in the book to give you a taste of the wealth of recipes. In Chapter 4, Ellen Marie takes the reader on tour of group usage. One of the recipes focuses on Creating Templates for students in a language class. The author firstly explains the different types of templates available; system, group and user, and the pros and cons of each. Then we are brought through the steps for creating a group template so that users can provide a range of evidence of their competency in the language. The template included:- Writing samples- Audio recordings- External video- Reflections- Translation of an audio piece- Translation of a video pieceThe author then explains how the student would be able to copy the template and fill it in with their content and submit it to the group admin for review and feedback. One thing I immediately like is that after the recipe, there is a "See Also" section pointing towards recipes which may be of interest if you like this one. Nice touch! In chapter two, the recipe on the Poetry Chapbook caught my interest. In this recipe the author introduces the method for digitally binding the portfolio pages on poetry together in a collection. The process is explained very clearly and it is very easy to follow. The interesting touch in this chapter is that we are provided with two techniques in one for navigation between the pages, either using the block or creating links between pages. The author also explains about adding a page to the chapbook after its already created for use as a Title page. Good Tip!Chapter 8 one of the recipes introduces us to building a portfolio access page for outside reviewers. This recipe caters to those who require external reviewers to have actual access to the students portfolios. I like the approach to the solution provided by the author and the clear well explained steps to achieve the outcome. The new combination of locking the pages and providing external access is a good approach to this problem. Very neat. Some of the recipes are great instructions on how to use the key parts of Mahara which some may not have come across yet - such as setting a theme and a layout for your profile page. I think that many people will find reading this book an essential part of their planning when considering Mahara for their institution. If you use Mahara or plan to use Mahara and haven't yet ordered your copy of this book, I recommend you give it a shot!

What makes a delicious meal? It's not just the individual ingredients, but how they are blended together in a mouth-watering composition. Cookbooks help both amateur and professional cooks to get this blend right and to get inspired to create variations on the presented recipes. Ellen Marie Murphy authored the Mahara 1.4 Cookbook for cooks new to Mahara (...) but also for those experienced in its use to give them fresh ideas of how to use this web application.Mahara is an open source ePortfolio web application that has been in existence since 2006. It is used around the world in compulsory, higher, and further education, and other institutions by people to compile their evidence of learning, to reflect on their learning, and to collaborate in projects. Version 1.4 of Mahara was released in June 2011.Ellen Marie Murphy is well-positioned to write a cookbook on Mahara because she is an active user and community member. Before she became Director of Online Curriculum at SUNY Empire State College in September 2011, she was Director of Learning Technologies and Online Education at Plymouth State University where Mahara is in use. In October 2010, Plymouth State University organized the New Hampshire Focus on ePortfolio Day to bring educators from K-12 and higher education together to share ideas about their ePortfolio use with each other. The Mahara 1.4 Cookbook contains 52 varied recipes in eight different categories. Whether you want to use Mahara for the visual arts, literature and writing, create your professional portfolio with it, work in groups, create an education portfolio with primary school kids, a social portfolio, a college application portfolio or use it for certification and accreditation in higher education, you find ideas in this cookbook. There are simple and short recipes that help you create a portfolio page within just a few minutes. And there are more complex recipes that guide you through the creation of a multi-page portfolio in which artifacts collected over a long period of time are arranged. The recipes can be followed by new users of Mahara as well as "old hats". After a brief explanation of the purpose of the recipe and a screenshot that shows an example, Ellen Marie offers step-by-step instructions that lead beginners to the goal. Experienced users of Mahara can go through the recipes more quickly as they already know the processes for uploading files, creating journal entries and pages etc., and can focus on the innovative ideas Ellen Marie provides for portfolios. These ideas allow learners to create engaging, visually pleasing, and informative portfolios which they can expand over time for their own professional purposes, to showcase it to others, or to use it in an application process, for example. The recipes often include additional tips and tricks which give learners further insight and options to vary the recipes and to adapt them. References to other recipes in the book help especially new users to find related content and to continue exploring Mahara by following authentic activities. In my opinion, the Mahara 1.4 Cookbook is a valuable reference book for any Mahara user who wishes to get fresh ideas for working with his / her portfolio. It is also a great resource for educators who want to use ePortfolios with their students in finding ways to encourage their students to reflect on their learning regularly and to compile their portfolios. Although the step-by-step instructions correspond to version 1.4 of Mahara, those who work on an older version of Mahara can still benefit from the presented ideas, and most recipes can be followed on an older version with only slight navigational changes. The Mahara 1.4 Cookbook is the second book written for Mahara and it follows in the steps of Mahara 1.2 E-Portfolios: Beginner's Guide as fantastic resource for Mahara users. It can be purchased as eBook and as paper book. Two thumbs up!--You can engage in the Mahara community discussions at [...] and trial the application yourself at (...)Thank you to Packt Publishing for a copy of the eBook for review.[Review originally published at (...)]

Ellen Marie Murphy dishes out some very satisfying recipes for integrating Mahara's ePortfolio into educational, social networking and professional settings. Just like a good recipe, the contents in this book are spelled out in detail with clear numbered steps and use of bold, links and screen shots to help readers at all levels. For those unfamiliar with Mahara, there are enough of the basics covered including uploading files, images and creating secret URLs. For the advanced users, there are topics on creating image galleries, developing poetry chapbooks, and using the collections feature to create web pages, tenure and promotion materials and accreditation ePortfolios. Ellen Marie Murphy skillfully describes even the most complex tasks in simple, broken-down steps and through her 8 chapters, the reader gets to experience the many flavors of Mahara - seeing just how versatile this open source ePortfolio system really is.Each chapter is well organized with a concise list of subtopics, a brief narrative introduction followed by clear "how to do it" and "how it works" recipe instructions. What's really useful about this text is that it does not have to be read sequentially to make sense. I started this book in the middle and read chapters according to my interest. Each chapter can stand alone as an extremely helpful guide. This book will be a valuable resource to teachers, instructional designers, students and anyone else interesting in using ePortfolios. Although the book focuses on the technical, Ellen Marie Murphy's understanding of the real pedagogical issues shines through and helps the reader to more fully understand the process.Ellen's creativity, skill and technical expertise combine to make Mahara 1.4 Cookbook a terrific read for novices and experts at any stage of ePortfolio use. Each recipe makes the reader want to dig in and log in to Mahara.
