I very rarely write reviews for things, but I felt compelled to do so for this book based on my experience.I had an amazing experience with this book for the first 3 chapters. There were some errors and things just plain missing in those chapters, but I was able to debug and provide solutions for those things. For example, some lines of code were omitted and score keeping was completely left out from Chapter 3. I have since found that errata is helpfully published on the GitHub repository. Overall I had a lot of fun working through the first 3 chapters.Chapter 4 is where I decided to give up and move on to other resources. I found the lack of guidance on level design and truly understanding and using tile maps and tile sets downright frustrating. Perhaps this chapter would be more approachable if I had prior game development experience. The author very much glosses over level design and it went from a poor explanation of the concept to just "now design your level". Referencing the finished project from the GitHub repository did not provide much assistance either. If you are new to game development, I think the first 3 chapters are a helpful introduction and they have definitely furthered my interest in both Godot and game development. However, I had to bail after Chapter 4 in search of better material.Perhaps I will return to the book after learning more from other resources.

I've been following this book to the letter and the games just don't work. There are parts that just aren't implemented. As an example, during the 2nd game, at some point the author suggests that you can run the game and "should" be able to fly around freely. Taking another look at the 40ish lines of code, there's nothing that would let you turn the ship. Ship rotation variables are declared and a function is written that also makes use of other variables, but there is no connection between them. In practice, the ship won't turn. Also found that in the first game, when the author suggests the game should be playable, for me godot will not run it. Returns a cryptic error. I suspect it's because the coins you're supposed to grab are missing some functions.I'd suggest if the author makes a 3rd edition he may want to walk through the entire book line by line again and test the resulting code. 2 games for 2 I've looked at the code examples and asked, "why would this even run?"The games look fun and it seems like a great book (I've read a few on game dev and they usually suck) it just needs some ironing out.

This book is poorly laid out in terms of the steps it asks you to follow. I have been trying to complete the first project for 3 days now, and I am completely lost as to what I am supposed to be doing, no matter how many times I read back over the steps. The book has you jumping from a piece of code that eventually causes errors, to then doubling back on yourself to update objects and add further lines of code to fix the error. This may sound trivial, but the latter steps could easily have been carried out first as this would have been a smoother, more intuitive workflow and saved a lot of confusion. This happens several times within the first project!I have extensive experience with Python and JavaScript, as well as frameworks and libraries, so I am not approaching GDScript as a complete novice. I am pointing this out as the book is making me question myself about how efficient the engine is in terms of structuring the code. There also seems to be some steps missing that you will need to figure out yourself, especially towards the end of the first project. My laptop was almost the victim of my frustration, but thankfully, my own intuition saved it.I will put the book aside and follow different tutorials. Maybe when I build up enough knowledge around the Godot engine, I will revisit it. Until then, I will seek some therapy, hopefully stop crying, and apologise to my laptop for the abuse it has taken!

Really productive book, each game expanding the Godot usage, with fun along the way. Very few omissions to confuse, you quickly find your feet to start using the software confidently
