Migrating RDS host servers
As a rule of thumb for RDS deployments, all Remote Desktop (RD) Connection Broker servers must be migrated first, unless your architecture does not contain any RD Connection Broker servers.
The order of migration and recommendations for multiple role servers for RDS are as follows:
- RD Connection Broker(s):
- If the RD Connection Brokers are deployed in a high-availability cluster, one host with the Connection Broker role can be left in the cluster while in-place upgrades are completed on the other hosts. Then, they can be added back to the cluster once upgraded.
- Ensure that all certificates for the RDS configuration have been exported (preferably as a PFX with a password) and imported into the new RDS configuration or environment.
- RD Session Host(s):
- Farms can contain Session Hosts with different Windows OS versions – it is highly recommended to use hosts with the same Windows Server version within the same RDS collection.
