Creating a VMkernel interface on a vSphere Distributed Switch
As mentioned earlier, VMkernel interfaces can only be managed at the vCenter Server level. Therefore, to create a VMkernel interface, you need to modify the network configuration on a per-host basis.
How to do it...
The following procedure explains how to create a VMkernel interface on a DSwitch:
With the ESXi server selected, navigate to Manage | Networking | Virtual switches, select the DSwitch, and click on the add networking icon:
Select VMkernel Network Adapter as the connection type, and click on Next:
Navigate to and select a DPortGroup on which the VMkernel interface has to be created, and click on Next to continue:
Select a function/service that will leverage this VMkernel interface, and click on Next. In this example, we will select vMotion traffic:
Supply the IP configuration for the interface, and click on Next:
Review the Ready to complete screen, and click on Finish:
