Chapter 6: Planning for Cost Savings – Reservations
In the previous chapter, we learned about getting rid of unused or ghost resources and right-sizing cloud objects to their requirements. This was a prerequisite for this chapter, where we will learn how to set up a governance process to handle reservations, from understanding the billing and pricing model to successfully driving a full capacity strategy for reserved services.
We will learn about privileges, actual versus amortized views, and using a workflow for execution. We will learn what to do when usage is not optimal and understand the financial implications of reservations, as well as how to deal with repetitive changes due to the fluid nature of cloud workloads.
The following topics will be covered in this chapter:
- What happens when a resource is reserved?
- Reservation utilization
- Dealing with changes and cancellations
After reading this chapter, you will be finally ready to make your reservations...
