This is a wonderful book for people considering a job in Instructional Design. It's a comprehensive and practical guide to developing the key competencies necessary for a successful career in this field. The book is well-structured, starting with a solid introduction to the foundational principles and instructional design theories. It then presents each of the four competencies clearly and concisely, accompanied by examples that are easy to follow. The author’s expertise and deep understanding of instructional design shine through in every chapter.I most appreciated Susan Nelson Spencer’s captivating writing style, which perfectly balances engaging and accessible, making complex concepts and theories easily digestible. She perfectly combines theory and practice, ensuring readers understand the principles behind effective instructional design and how to apply them in real-world situations.I recommend this book to instructional designers, educators, trainers, and anyone interested in creating compelling and impactful learning experiences.

I was recently asked how instructional designers actually design content - what is the process? How do you ensure it is effective for learners? The answers to these questions (and more) can be found in this book. Many of us in the industry are "accidental Instructional Designers" - meaning that this isn't the path we chose, but it is the path that chose us. Whether we started off as training developers, teachers, helpdesk staff who found they really liked the "how-to" part of the job, corporate trainers, or a myriad of other roles, ultimately, we arrived at the door of instructional design. Once you arrive here, this is where Next-Level Instructional Design comes into play.In this book, you will find a myriad of helpful, practical information and application. If you have ever wondered how you might be able to use your current experience as a foundation to move into instructional design, this book outlines this very clearly. And, I love the incorporation of use cases that walks readers through each of the four competency chapters. This provides context and a concrete, thorough, practical way of thinking about how you move through the instructional design process. Throughout the use case, this book outlines typical pitfalls that are often experienced in projects and how those pitfalls can affect the success of the project. Understanding these at the beginning of your career as an ID will save you countless hours of frustration. This book not only walks you through the process of a typical project, but also provides examples for common ID processes and deliverables, such as items to discuss in a kick-off meeting, course outline, Design Document, and Storyboard. It also includes research-based suggestions (as well as examples) of things to consider when designing training, such as how to chunk content, the optimal length of content to engage attention span, etc. In addition, you'll get to practice what you have learned and gauge your knowledge by completing various activities and reflecting on the answers. One final thought is that this book covers things that truly are "Next-Level" for IDs. The chapter on creativity is a refreshing reminder that the more we develop our creativity, the better our training will be. And, the book offers a myriad of ways to do just that, including by incorporating design thinking (with examples!).Ultimately, if you are looking to shift into the field of ID or elevate your ID skills, I highly recommend Next-Level Instructional Design as a no-frills, practical, application-based book.

This book is written for teachers, graphic designers, and others who are switching to the field of instructional design. It's designed for people who don't have formal training in instructional design to reach the "next level" by growing their skills. I appreciate how this book connects experiences from other fields to instructional design, helping readers identify what they already know and where they have gaps in their skills. This book isn't about multimedia development skills, but more on the analysis, planning, design, writing, and project management side of instructional design. In fact, if you have skills in tools like Storyline and want to "level up," this book is a helpful resource. The four competencies are teaching, writing, creativity, and communication. Each section includes descriptions of real projects as examples of the competencies in action. I was especially glad to see writing included here. I think writing is an underappreciated skill for instructional designers, and one that is frequently insufficiently taught even in graduate programs.(In the interest of transparency, I'll note that I am cited in the project management communication chapter, with several links to my blog.)Overall, this is a useful and helpful book for new instructional designers. In particular, the focus on writing and communication set it apart from many other resources for new IDs.

In this essential and practical, resources-packed guidebook uncovering four Instructional Design competencies that are the crux of ID, Susan Nelson Spencer offers her expertise with intellectual humility. Highlighting the importance of teaching, writing, creativity, and communication, Susan’s use cases are definitely a must-read for any instructional designer starting in this field. Through her real-life examples, step by step, she helps you think through problems and possible solutions and shares the outcomes and lessons learned. As you read the book, you can’t help but notice that this type of content is typically unavailable in books and can mainly be accessed when you have a mentor or coach in the industry. You genuinely feel as though she is having a one-on-one coaching session with you - what a treat! The bonus: Tons of resources, including links to articles, videos, assessments, templates, and practical, time-saving pointers that any new ID or one entrenched in the field can add to their toolkit.
