A web application firewall (WAF) is an important tool for controlling the traffic of a cloud-native system. A WAF protects the system by blocking traffic from common exploits such as bad bots, SQL injection, Cross-Site Scripting (XSS), HTTP floods, and known attackers. We effectively create a perimeter around the system that blocks traffic at the edge of the cloud before it can impact system resources. We can use many of the techniques in this book to monitor internal and external resources and dynamically update the firewall rules as the flow of traffic changes.
