Exploring the platform engineering service
A cloud platform can be divided into the physical platform layers and the cloud platform layers, where all the IaaS and PaaS products are deployed; the middleware layer, where middleware and SaaS solutions are deployed; and finally, the application layer. Each managed service, such as PaaS or IaaS, provided by a cloud provider has its own responsibility matrix, which defines the roles and responsibilities of service providers and organizations. Figure 10.2 shows the shared responsibilities for IaaS product management between IBM and customers. Therefore, in addition to the service management by the service or cloud provider, organizations should also establish the processes, practices, toolchains, and governance for the service management of different services deployed on the cloud. Usually, the cloud provider manages the physical layers and hypervisor layer.
