Creating and enforcing site standards

Users like applications that behave consistently and have a standard look and feel. You can achieve this by creating and enforcing site development standards.

Background

It's always a good idea to set some rules for how applications should be developed, regardless of the tool you are using for development. A clear, sensible set of standards that everyone can agree on should be developed before starting any major development. By thinking things through carefully beforehand, you will find that once you create your site standards, you probably never need to change them. Generally, your standards should include details such as change documentation (refer to the section, Separation of responsibilities, change management, and thinking about security, in this chapter), coding standards, naming conventions, screen layouts, and styling (refer to Designing a site-style template in this chapter).

Site standards really fall into two areas: the part...

Designing a site-style template

To help achieve a consistent look and feel to your applications, create a site-style template. This is a small QlikView document that forms part of your site standards.

Background

Having a site-style template to work from can help create the same look and feel for your applications and saves a lot of time because you do not have to create every new application from scratch. Your site-style template includes your corporate color scheme, logos, and prototypes for objects. It can also include a framework script that names the standard INCLUDE files. A site-style template has advantages over the theme maker, which is accessible from Document properties | Layout, because this feature does not enable you to include logos, scripting, or prototypes of objects.

How to do it

The site-style template forms an integral part of your site's standards. Rather than spelling out every feature in the site standards, by creating a template, you can set the style rules. Every...

Making document names meaningful

Most developers keep several versions of a QlikView document and prefix or suffix them with a date or version number. Deploying differently-named versions of the same application to the Access Point should be avoided.

Background

There is nothing to prevent a developer from deploying many differently-named versions of an application to the Access Point. It's also possible to deploy different versions of a document with the same name to the Access Point by putting them in different mount folders.

Obviously, these situations should be avoided as they lead to confusion. Always deploy the same document with the same name as part of standard practice, use version numbering in code, and display it for the user to see in the document itself, as described in the Creating and enforcing site standards section in this chapter.

How to do it

As developers, we all like to keep a few different versions of a QlikView document in case we need to go back to a previous version...

Separation of responsibilities, change management, and thinking about security

Developing an application can be a single person task, but more often, there are more people involved. Change requests and access to the application need to be controlled. It is also important to consider what kind of security is required.

Background

If you are in the enviable position of being able to develop an application from scratch on your own, you don't have to worry about the separation of tasks. Change management is a lot easier too, but there are still aspects that need to be considered.

How to do it

You have probably come across the question, "How do you eat an elephant?" to which the answer is, "Cut it into small chunks and eat it bit by bit". The same is true when developing a QlikView application. The advantage of having all these small bits is that different people can work on the application at the same time.

Understanding the differences in environments

QlikView comes in many shapes and sizes and with extra add-ons too. These can have a dramatic effect on how your server is configured. In addition, there are many ways that you can license the use of your documents. All have their advantages, and all have cost implications.

Background

How your server runs depends on the basic server version you are using. It could be Small Business Server, Enterprise Server, or Extranet Server. You need to know whether it is a Full license or a Test license and whether QlikView Publisher is installed and licensed.

Once the server type is established, next come User Licenses (sometimes referred to as CALs). There are currently four types to choose from: Named User, Document, Session, and Usage.

There are a couple of significant differences between these two versions. Firstly, the number of User CALs that Small Business Edition can have is limited...

In this chapter, you learned about the importance of creating and enforcing standards for coding and layout. We also discovered that proper discipline about naming QlikView documents will make things much easier for users, and licenses will not mysteriously disappear from the server.

We also discussed the separation of responsibilities, change management, and that we need to consider security early in our development journey, not right at the end.

QlikView Unlocked is a good book for both fresher and intermediate developers who are keen to understand some core QlikView development aspects and learn some tips and tricks and better practices along the way. Neatly written, concise and useful too.

This is quite a short tome but it still manages to cover a lot of ground - and it does it well. I've been a QlikView developer for quite some time, even so I learned a number of things I didn't know previously and the acquired knowledge is certainly worth the price of this little book. Well written in an easy to read style. Recommended!

A great read for newbies or experienced QlikView users like myself. I enjoyed the fact there is always new things to learn and this book has a number of new hints and tips. The book covers everything from scripting to design through to server and publisher. If you want to buy just one book on QlikView, I'd highly recommend this one.

Roger Stone
Roger Stone is a freelance QlikView consultant based in Oxfordshire, UK. He entered the computer industry in 1977 and has worked with a huge variety of programming languages and tools all over the world. Finally discovering QlikView in late 2009, he has worked on numerous successful QlikView implementations in a wide range of industries, from insurance to healthcare. In 2010, Roger founded One QV Ltd with coauthor Andrew Dove, and together they developed 1HR, a QlikView-based human resources application aimed at the National Health Service in the UK. 1HR has since been deployed to more than 25 NHS Trusts. He currently holds QlikView Designer, Developer, and Systems Administrator Certifications for QlikView 11. Roger enjoys travel, Belgian beer, and military history, all of which are combined in his frequent trips to Belgium.

Our eBooks are currently available in a variety of formats such as PDF and ePubs. In the future, this may well change with trends and development in technology, but please note that our PDFs are not Adobe eBook Reader format, which has greater restrictions on security.

You will need to use Adobe Reader v9 or later in order to read Packt's PDF eBooks.

Packt eBooks are a complete electronic version of the print edition, available in PDF and ePub formats. Every piece of content down to the page numbering is the same. Because we save the costs of printing and shipping the book to you, we are able to offer eBooks at a lower cost than print editions.

When you have purchased an eBook, simply login to your account and click on the link in Your Download Area. We recommend you saving the file to your hard drive before opening it.
