At some point, every SharePoint Server farm needs to have maintenance tasks performed on it, such as updating with a newer service pack or cumulative update. These updates typically provide security enhancements or new features and capabilities.
Updating SharePoint Server farms can require multiple steps, including two separate types of update files:
- Public updates, which are language-independent updates
- A language-dependent patch, which contains language-specific updates
While the public updates are typically released monthly, the language-dependent patch may not be. When performing a public update, it's necessary to rerun the most recent language update patch to ensure that all the components continue to function correctly.
