Creating breaks
Beginners to Microsoft Word and other word processing programs frequently make the mistake of creating new sections or pages by simply hitting the Return or Enter key repeatedly on their keyboard to create the appearance of a new page or a new section within their document. The problem with this method is that if you ever go back and edit a previous paragraph in your document or insert a picture or resize anything that appears before all those carriage returns, all that space may shift to an unintended place within your document.
A break is different from hitting the Enter key on your keyboard. In fact, if you open any Word document and click on the Show/Hide Paragraph Marks toggle button, you can view all of the hidden formatting marks in any Word document to view all the spaces, paragraph marks, or even section breaks that appear within that document. You can find this option in the Home tab, as you can see in the following screenshot:
