Mastering JIRA 7

Chapter 2. Searching in JIRA

This chapter has a detailed explanation of how data can be fetched from JIRA. The data is used for analysis, reporting, and taking appropriate action. The Issue Navigator window offers a very easy mechanism to search for issues, but it's possible to write queries using JIRA Query Language (JQL) to refine the search results. You will learn how to save the search results as filters and charts that can be added in the dashboard. This can be shared with other users and can also serve as a data source for various gadgets.

We will cover the following topics:

  • The Issue Navigator window
  • Searching the issues
  • Filters and subscriptions
  • Introduction to JQL
  • Browser shortcuts
  • Exporting issues in Excel, RSS, XML, and JSON

The Issue Navigator window

JIRA comes with a powerful feature that will let you find issues quickly and take action. For instance, you can easily search all the bugs of a particular project named cristata (which have been in an open state for the past 2 weeks) using the following JQL query:

project = CSTA AND issuetype = Bug AND created >= -2w

The preceding query is written in JQL (a language in JIRA to search for issues). However, if you are new to JIRA, then you can also use the Basic search feature to find issues; you don't need to learn JQL for this. Moreover, learning it is not so difficult.

You can switch from Basic search to Advanced search to deal with the preceding query. Let's first take a look at the features provided by the Basic search in the Issue Navigator window.

From the top menu bar, click on Issues | Search for issues, as shown in the following screenshot:

The Issue Navigator window

Searching the issues

Now you will be taken to the Issue Navigator and the default view is the Detail View:

Searching the issues

In the Detail View window, a lot more information about the issue is visible, such as the Details, Description, Assignee, Reporter, and Workflow buttons to transform it into another available state. You can quickly browse through the issue and view the information in the center of the screen.

The List View doesn't display too much information. The issues are displayed in the form of a table. Switch to the List View from the drop-down menu in the top-right corner, as shown in the following screenshot:

Searching the issues

By default, a few issue fields are displayed in the List View, but you can always add more columns to your view.

So far, we have not refined the issues for a specific project. The default Basic search option will let you apply several conditions to refine the issues. You will find a set of buttons at the top of the issue list that will let you apply multiple conditions.

Filters and subscriptions

We just saw how to search bugs that have been open within the past 2 weeks for a particular project. Now, what if we want to perform this search twice a week? Well, you can always go to the Issue Navigator and apply the conditions again or write a JQL query. However, there is an amazing feature in JIRA that allows you to not only save your searches, but also receive the results in an e-mail.

Click on the Save as button at the top of the screen to save the search:

Filters and subscriptions

In the pop-up window, enter the Filter Name and click on the Submit button to save the query. In JIRA, these saved results are called filters.

After you save the filter, you can always click on the filter name from the left-hand side panel in the Issue Navigator.

Subscriptions

E-mail subscription is another good feature that JIRA offers which e-mails the list of the issues in a particular filter either to you or to a group of JIRA users.

Introduction to JQL

JQL is one of the best features in JIRA; it lets you search the issues efficiently and offers a lot of handy features. The best part about JQL is that it's very easy to learn, thanks to the autocomplete functionality in the Advanced search that offers suggestions to the user based on the keywords typed.

JQL consists of either single or multiple questions. These questions can be combined to form complex questions.

The basic JQL syntax

JQL has a field followed by an operator. For instance, to retrieve all the issues of the CSTA project, you can use a simple query like this:

project = CSTA

Now, within this project, if you want to find the issues assigned to a specific user, use the following query:

project = CSTA and assignee = ravisagar

There might be several issues assigned to a user and maybe we just want to focus on issues whose priority is either Critical or Blocker:

project = CSTA and assignee = ravisagar and priority in (Blocker, Critical)

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
