Adding heat glow and smoke


In this task, you will finish off the explosion effect by adding a heat glow to the objects nearest to the source of the explosion and a little after-explosion smoke. A heat glow is a reaction of elements in the shot, walls, doors, and so on, to the expanding ball of flame; it's used to create the illusion that real-world objects are interacting with the pre-composited explosion you added in an earlier task. Once again, you will use keyframes, a mask, and the new Blend Modes feature of CS6 to complete this section. You will also make good use of Blend Modes to turn an ordinary smoke clip into something a little cooler.

Engage Thrusters

Add a heat glow to enhance the explosion effect by following these steps:

  1. Start by setting the Project panel as active, and open the Images bin without creating a new window. In this bin, create new Color Matte (File | New | Color Matte...). Accept the default frame settings by clicking on OK, and the Color Picker window will appear...
