Data drives everything – a common use case

This section will review two fascinating use cases of in-situ environment monitoring and their surprisingly complementary outcomes. While this section talks about the technical implementation of the solution, a real-world example using AWS will be presented more fully in the next chapter.

OEE for a legacy plastic manufacturer

The following use case belongs to an injection molding machine manufacturing line. This is a legacy machine that was commissioned decades ago. While it is still functioning, there are a lot of inefficiencies due to downtime, maintenance, and so on that are impacting the outcome of finished goods. The existing setup consisted of a machine that produced molded plastic parts continuously, with inputs being the shaping mold and raw plastic sheets. The produced goods are manually checked, and quality is passed to the packaging department:
