Creating a source matrix


Identifying the source of record for information within the conceptual model enables the project team to understand where the key information is sourced.

Getting ready

Gather the blueprint information and information obtained during the first recipe of this chapter.

How to do it...

The source matrix identifies the business source of record for each of the business entities:

  1. 1. Open your data lineage spreadsheet and create an additional tab called Source Matrix:

  2. 2. Place your business entities across the top of the worksheet:

  3. 3. From the source analysis worksheet, identify all the sources for the different business entities:

How it works...

By identifying the source of record for the entities in the conceptual model, it is easy to see where there could be master data management issues, data integrity or quality issues, and areas which require additional logic to combine and/or standardise information from multiple sources.
