Introduction
As you add hosts to your vSphere Cluster, there is definitely a need for a method to balance the utilization of computing resources. vSphere DRS is a set of algorithms designed for this. It continuously monitors resource utilization on the ESXi hosts and does an intelligent allocation of resources, balances the computing capacity, and also helps in reducing the power consumption in the datacenter.
Balancing the computing resources will ensure that a virtual machine (VM) gets the resources it needs thereby increasing the service levels.
VMware DPM (Distributed Power Management) can help reduce the energy consumption of a datacenter by vacating VMs from an underutilized host and leaving that host in a powered-off state.
In this chapter we will discuss how to enable and use DRS's features. We would also learn how to use VMware EVC (Enhanced vMotion Compatibility).
