Features removed from Exchange Server 2013

Now you know the basics of new features and similar functionalities in comparison to Exchange Server 2007 and/or 2010, we would like to draw your attention to some of the features and components that have been removed from this latest edition, without going into much detail, because they are gone anyway.

Following table gives an overview of the most important removed features:

Removed Feature

Feature Description

Hub Transport server role

What was a separate server role in Exchange Server 2007 and 2010, has been incorporated into the Mailbox Transport service on the mailbox server role in Exchange Server 2013, as well as the Front End Transport service on the Client Access Server.

Unified Messaging server role

This separate server role in Exchange 2007 and 2010 has been replaced by the Unified Messaging Service; these components run on both the Mailbox Server and Client Access Server in Exchange 2013.

Exchange Management Console

Has been replaced with the web administration console, known as EAC (Exchange 2013 Administration Center).

Exchange Control Panel (ECP)

Although parts of the ECP still exist, it has been replaced completely by the EAC.

Outlook 2003 support

Exchange 2013 doesn't support Outlook 2003. Main reason is that this edition is now completely relying on AutoDiscover service, as well as the Outlook Anywhere (RPC/HTTP) functionalities.

For a complete overview of the removed features, please consult the following Microsoft TechNet article:

We hope this appendix has given you enough inside in the core updates and new features of Exchange Server 2013.
