Understanding the WaaS model
In Chapter 4, Comparing Core Services in Microsoft 365, we reviewed how Windows deployment and servicing has been managed historically. To summarize, Microsoft traditionally released operating system feature updates once every 2 to 4 years. Due to the significant feature and capability changes, operating system upgrades would frequently require significant amounts of testing to ensure hardware and application compatibility. This tedious update and refresh cycle could consume organizations for months or years.
WaaS is Microsoft's modern way to keep operating systems current and secure, as well as ensuring a smooth path to deploy security updates and release incremental features.
