Kali Linux Wireless Penetration Testing Essentials

Chapter 2. Setting Up Your Machine with Kali Linux

In this chapter, we will cover the following topics to set up your laptop for wireless penetration testing:

  • Introduction to the Kali Linux distribution
  • Installing Kali Linux
  • Wireless adapter setup and configuration

Introduction to the Kali Linux distribution

Kali Linux is the most popular and used distribution for penetration testing and security auditing. It is developed and maintained by Offensive Security and it replaces Backtrack Linux being the first release of Kali Linux, the successor of Backtrack 5 release 3.

Kali Linux has been completely re-built and now it is based on Debian. It includes a wide range of tools for reconnaissance and information gathering, sniffing, and spoofing, vulnerability assessment, password cracking, exploitation, reverse engineering, hardware hacking, forensics investigation, incident handling, and reporting. For wireless penetration testing, there is a dedicated set (the kali-linux-wireless metapackage) of the most known open source tools, such as the Aircrack-ng suite, Kismet, Fern Wifi Cracker, Wifite, and Reaver, among others.

In this book, we will mainly use the Aircrack-ng suite, developed by Thomas d'Otreppe, because it is the most complete and popular...

Installing Kali Linux

There are three methods to install Kali Linux, on the hard disk (on the single boot or multiboot), on a USB thumb drive to use it as a live system, or on a virtual machine using software such as Oracle VirtualBox and VMware Workstation or Player.

The installation requires at least 10 GB of hard disk space and at least 1,024 MB of RAM is recommended, although Kali Linux can run over only 512 MB of RAM.

Installing Kali Linux on the hard drive is better regarding the performances but it has the drawback of dedicating all the hard disk space to it or partitioning the hard drive and using a partition to install it, while the installation on a virtual machine provides us a lightly slower system but also much more flexibility and we don't have to modify the configuration of the hard disk.

We can either install Kali Linux on a virtual machine with the downloadable ISO or directly use the VMware or VirtualBox prebuilt images. The 32 or 64 bits ISOs can be downloaded from...

Wireless adapter setup and configuration

Now that we have installed Kali Linux on our VM, it is time to talk about the wireless adapter configuration. However, first let's take a look at its requirements.

Requirements of the wireless adapter

The main requirements that a wireless adapter must meet to be suitable for wireless penetration testing are:

  • Compatibility with the IEEE 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi standards and possibly also with 802.11a, which operates on the 5 GHz band (dual-band support).
  • The capability to put the card in the so-called monitor mode, which allows to sniff all the wireless traffic. The monitor mode is equivalent to the promiscuous mode in wired networks.
  • The capability to support packet injection to actively inject traffic into the network.

To verify that our Wi-Fi adapter satisfies these requirements, we first need to determine its chipset and verify that its Linux drivers support both monitor mode and packet injection. We will see how to practically test whether our adapter...

Summary

In this chapter, we have seen how to create a virtual machine using Virtual Box and how to install Kali Linux on it. After covering the wireless adapter's requirements for wireless penetration testing, we have configured the USB wireless adapter to work with Kali Linux and tested it for the requirements that we analyzed earlier.

In the next chapter, we are going to cover the wireless penetration testing's discovery and information gathering phase.

I obtained this book directly through the Packt Publishing website. Once again I am very impressed with the quality of the books that they publish. This book, although somewhat shorter than others I've read with the same topic, it was still very informative. Despite the being a shorter book it contained information that was new to me, and covered topics that was not included in the other half dozen or so other books I've read about the Backtrack/Kali Linux distribution for penetration testing. The information was presented in a clear and easy to follow format that I find typical of books published by Packt. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with an interest in penetration testing.

Kali Linux Wireless Penetration Testing Essentials provides the reader a good roadmap from planning phase to reporting and everything in between. It covers basic theories of wireless vulnerabilities and attacks using tools found in the popular distro Kali Linux. The book is very easy to read and follow and include an installation guide with a VM version of Kali and network card installation. One thing that would've been great is to include a chapter on how to setup a lab environment but overall a good resource. I would recommend it to anyone who wants an introductory level wireless penetration and security understanding.

The book turns wireless hacking into a child’s play for the advanced users who already have the experience as a network administrator. If you are a newbie, please do not be afraid of using Kali Linux. Using this book as a manual and following its helpful screenshots will surely accomplish your task quite easily; there is no doubt about it. Yes, Sir! This book makes Wi-Fi pentesting quite an easy job by making you familiar with the modern attacking techniques. But, don't get me wrong! This is not a definite Bible, but a helpful guide with step-by-step instructions (indeed, you will have to use Google for more details on the topics). In other words, please be aware of the fact that a 100-page book is far too less to provide you with the theoretical background needed to understand how things work behind the machine, but this one starts directly with an in-hand approach. Having said that, you also need some basic knowledge of Linux command line and sys-admin skills in order to avoid unnecessary frustration. The reason I am giving 4 out of 5 stars to this book is because I would like to see a chapter about how to properly set up and configure a testing environment that could be used as a target for the techniques described in this book
