Going green (screen) addendum — using the mask effect to cut out unwanted parts of an image


We had a pretty easy time fixing our image in the previous two recipes. Our green screen, while poorly lit, covered the background entirely so we only had to tweak a couple of parameters to finesse the key.

However, you may run into a scenario where you have a green screen backdrop that isn't large enough to cover the entire background of your shot. We can mask out edges of our image to fix this. Another example is when a light, stand, or boom mic is in the shot.

Getting ready

We're going to use a different angle of the same fake news broadcast from the previous couple of recipes. Notice that on the right of the frame, we can see the background of the room.

How to do it...

  1. 1. Add the Keyer effect to your clip and tweak the parameters as necessary to key out the backdrop, while temporarily ignoring any obvious background element not covered by the green screen that is still in the shot.
