Drupal 7 Media

Chapter 2. Views, Blocks, and Themes

After we covered the basics of Drupal's building blocks, nodes, and how is content handled in Drupal, we will learn about the presentation layer of a typical Drupal website and some of its essential components.

In this chapter, we will cover:

  • The use of the Views module

  • Understanding and making use of the blocks system

  • Learning about themes and installing a new theme

Views

Up to this point we have discussed how content is structured, how are fields added to it, and even the actual styling of it's view and creating content.

An important aspect of working with content is not just about creating, editing, or deleting but also retrieving this content and displaying it as a list of items in many different styles (although do not confuse this with a content type's view modes).

Views, another powerful community-contributed module, aids in this task of providing an administrative user interface (UI) for building content listings, among many other tasks. If you have a little bit of database background then you can think of the Views module as a tool to create the SQL queries that retrieve and build content, which is exactly what Views is doing behind the scenes.

With Views you can create content listing as follows:

  • Recent Memos that were created by users

  • Reports about Memos used in your website

  • Upcoming events mentioned in Memos

The Views module is one of tens of thousands...

Blocks and themes

Themes are a very important aspect of every website as they create the look and feel and are expected to convey a very intuitive and user friendly presentation of the underlying functionality.

Drupal's theme layer is very flexible and powerful, among many things it is composed from a collection of web assets like CSS, JavaScript, images, and of course the HTML template layouts.

Blocks

When looking at a website, it is often very common to notice a sort of pattern that emerges in the overall website's layout. Taking the US government's white house website (http://whitehouse.gov) for example, we can break it's layout into the following parts:

  • The header which is at the top has to the left of it the White House's title, if so to say, along with a logo at the middle and some useful links to the right like contacting them

  • The horizontal menu is the main navigation area of the website, right after the header line

  • The middle top parts wins with image rich content and even wraps around...

Summary

In this chapter we learned how to display content with the use of the Views module user interface which enables us to create content listing quite easily, without writing code, and without any knowledge of database.

We then moved on to the presentation layer of Drupal and learned how to create and position content elements (blocks) in the various positions (regions) which our theme allows for and even install a new theme of our choosing to introduce a completely new look and feel.

In the next chapter we will start working with the very first and primary media resources in websites, images. We will explore how to work with images on a Drupal website, such as embedding them correctly, managing image content across a website, and more.

Key benefits

  • Leverage the best Drupal community modules for media integration
  • Extend media resources such as image styles, slideshows, galleries, and media management to enrich the user experience
  • Learn how to use HTML5 for responsive web design and semantic websites, and implement a better cross-compatible web application

Description

Integrating images, video, and audio content on a Drupal site requires knowledge of appropriate community modules, and an understanding of how to configure and connect them properly. With the power of up-to-date technologies such as HTML5, responsive web design, and the best modules available in Drupal's eco-system, we can create the best Drupal 7 media website. Drupal 7 Media is a practical, hands-on guide that will introduce you to the basic structure of a Drupal site and guide you through the integration of images, videos, and audio content. Learn to leverage the most suitable community modules and up-to-date technology such as HTML5 to offer a great user experience through rich media content. The book begins with a practical introduction to the basic Drupal building blocks. It then breaks down each media resource, and explores them in detail. You will learn how to leverage Drupal's community modules to implement support for images, videos, and audio content, along with the best practices for implementation. We will be mentioning ideas throughout the book, which you can extend upon and use to build your own web applications. We will explore HTML5 support for media resources, the semantic web, and responsive web design, which are key topics in modern web application development. We will then build upon this knowledge and add more functionality to our sample website, such as support for analytic charts and customizing images, all of which we will implement using our own custom modules. You will learn everything you need to know about building, extending, and configuring a Drupal 7 media web application.

Who is this book for?

If you are a Drupal site builder and you wish to spice up your web applications with rich media content, then this book is for you. A basic understanding of HTML, JavaScript, and basic PHP module development in Drupal would be helpful, but is not necessary.

What you will learn

  • Set up a custom WYSIWYG profile and text format
  • Learn to manage and embed images in content, and create image galleries and albums
  • Manage and embed videos and audio playlists
  • Set up HTML5-based video and audio players and integrate with JavaScript libraries for native browser support
  • Enhance images with visual effects, and media content with multiple upload widgets, social ratings, watermark effects, and other community-contributed modules

Drupal 7 media is very good book for learning how to use Drupal and media files. I like this book because it gives lots of good examples. I also like how it shows the actual page of the software it is talking about. Sometimes when reading it is difficult to understand how to make changes to the page. By showing the actual page that they are talking about it makes it a lot easier to understand how to make the changes the book is talking about. It also has lots of good pictures that you might use plus shows how they will look on the actual page. I would recommend this to anyone using Drupal and wondering how to work with media files.

One of the biggest challenges Drupal presents is dealing with media files. Because of the open nature of the product, there is usually a lot of time needed to make something as simple as an image gallery. I spent many hours designing one myself using different image handlers, a custom content type, views and HTML entities that presentImageediting controls.Packtpub.com has a great resource for those who are dealing with media files. I just picked it up but it looks like it is going to be a great resource for me. I specifically plan to use it for a video based help system for the website that I am currently working on.

I chose "5 stars" because the book is just wonderful for Drupal on learning multimedia. It's concise and straight forward, stating what was done and the reasons why they were done. No assumptions (i.e assuming that reader(s) must have known this or that) at all. It's detail and precept after precept. The only thing which I think the writer(s) can look into is a few "miss outs" in steps to follow which was easy for me to figure out and actually it worked out well even though I was a first timer on Drupal.I will recommend it for NEWBIES on Drupal because everything there in was detail and clear.

I've just finished the book Drupal 7 Media and I would define it like a good guide to introduce us in the world of media content, HTML5, or semantic web, from a Drupal's perspective. You can get it from [...] and is edited by Packt PublishingThe author is Liran Tal who has currently worked at HP Software with a Drupal-based platform. The first chapters talk about first steps with Drupal, explaining the Drupal's architecture and the Drupal's way of work. If you have knowledge of blocks, views, etc, you can avoid read it without fear.In the third chapter, Lian starts talking about images in Drupal, the form to install a rich text editor like wysiwyg and media module. He also explains other modules around media, like the one to build image galleries.I missed some words about media and json formats to embed image into a textarea, and also something about migrate module to import text contents, extracting img tags to media fields.Next, he talks about HTML5 and how to start using it in Drupal. In the next chapters he explains us how to use video and audio content in our sites. We'll see how easy we can incorporate youtube videos, etc.He also writes about RDFa and microdata, quite interesting this chapter to learn more about these terms that are gaining importance in the web development.Last month, I assisted to DrupalCamp Spain in Cáceres and I attended to a session ([...] on semantic web, which was presented in a module in dev state that uses Apache Stanbol, Apache Marmotta and Apache Solr with Redlink project.I really think this module was good and I guess that it will be mentioned in the future in other chapters like this. The graph has also a space in the book. The author writes about one of the modules to get graphs in Drupal and integrate it with views. In this topic there are lots of options, with more or less cost in development and other thinks. For example, use the google graph API maybe is not the best option to make an intranet with private corporative data.About responsive web design, it simply provides us a glimpse of our themes to build responsive websites. Finally we performed a review of Drupal 8 and its changes. In conclusion, the book is a good option if you are a site builder, new in world of drupal, or if you don't know how to built sites with multimedia content, microdata or html5.If you are a Drupal hero, maybe you can only catch some information about some module to build something specific.- See more at: [...]

Throughout the many years I've been working with Drupal there have been countless variations on how to add media into a Drupal website. Thankfully, Drupal is maturing its media subsystem into greatness.Drupal 7 Media gives us a glimpse into the future of that subsystem. At the time of writing this review the subsystem is still in heavy development yet it is stable enough to use it on a live site.Recently, I was faced with the huge learning curve when building a site using the new media subsystem, which is when I looked for a book to fast track myself. Successful I was thanks to this title.Drupal 7 Media is great for experienced and beginner site builders alike though I feel it's a little verbose for the former. Reading this book was far more convenient than combing through countless posts on drupal.org to find the information I needed. Saved me loads of time and frustration. Saved money for my clients too.
