They include companies, some over a hundred years old, way back from the time of Alexander Graham Bell, with revenue of hundreds of billions of dollars – AT&T, Verizon, Deutsche Telecom, NTT, China Mobile, Telefonica, and Vodafone.

With customers demanding ever more capable communication services, telcos have had increasing budget outlays. By one estimate, the 30 largest telcos incur more than $900 billion in operating expenditure (OpEx) and more than $270 billion in capital expenditure (CapEx) per year.
