Adding the required lights


Lighting is not about illumination. Lighting is not about making things visible. Lighting, in fact, is often used to hide things. Take a look at the original Alien by Ridley Scott. Up until the very end we see very little of the creature. The monster is hinted at and kept in the darkness. That's what makes it so scary.

Lighting is an artistic choice. The sooner you stop thinking about lighting as a way of making objects visible, the sooner you will start using it as an artistic tool. Think of each light as a paintbrush that provides a brush stroke of a certain shape, color, and strength.

There is no doubt that there is a great deal of technical detail about lighting. Like any craft, lighting requires some technical knowledge. The same is true for painting, photography, and hundreds of other artistic activities. Even graffiti artists need to know the technical points of how to mix the right type of spray paint and how to use stencils properly. Don't let the technicalities...
