Using data science for the common good
Since data science is a powerful field and often data scientists are highly paid, it's good to give back to the community by using data science for the common good. There are several ways to do this, and it can even be used as a way to break into data science. For example, we can volunteer our skills for non-profit organizations through organizations like DataKind (https://www.datakind.org/) and Solve for Good (https://solveforgood.org/).
There are also several data science for social good (DSSG) fellowships throughout the US and Europe, which are often 3-month summer programs where data scientists work on projects that benefit the community. This includes programs at several universities such as Stanford and Carnegie Mellon.
