Why you cannot call it Reporting Services

SQL Server has been around for many years now and has evolved over its different versions. Reporting Services was introduced with the release of SQL Server 2000.

When Reporting Services was released, Microsoft offered a free webcast explaining the features of this new reporting technology. Rumor says that until today this webcast was the second most popular webcast ever from Microsoft and the number of downloads for Reporting Services increased exponentially.

The reason for its popularity cannot be explained just because of its 'free' license model. Reporting Services is fully integrated with SQL server and has evolved with every new version of SQL server. It contains a complete set of tools to manage, create, and consult reports, based upon any type of database that can be accessed via OLE DB, ODBC, or the .NET data provider.
