Kubernetes for Serverless Applications

An Introduction to Kubernetes

As mentioned at the end of the previous chapter, in this chapter we are going to look at Kubernetes. We will discuss:

  • A brief history of Kubernetes—where did it come from?
  • How does it operate?
  • What are the use cases for Kubernetes and who is using it?
  • Why would you run serverless on servers?

A brief history of Kubernetes

Before we discuss where Kubernetes came from, we should quickly discuss what Kubernetes is. It is pronounced koo-ber-net-eez and sometimes referred to as K8s. Kubernetes is the Greek name for a helmsman or pilot of a ship, which is apt when you consider what Kubernetes is designed to do. The project's website, which you can find at https://kubernetes.io/, describes it as:

"An open-source system for automating deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications."

The project has its roots in an internal project at Google called Borg. Google has been a longtime user of container technology, long before Docker made a splash.

Google's own container...

An overview of Kubernetes

Now that we have an idea of how Kubernetes came to be, we should walk through all of the different components that go to make up a typical Kubernetes cluster.

Kubernetes itself is written in Go. While the project's GitHub page shows that the project is currently 84.9% Go, the rest, 5.8% HTML, 4.7% Python, and 3.3% Shell (with the remainder being configuration/spec files, and so on), are all documentation and helper scripts.

Go is a programming language developed and open sourced by Google who describes it as A fast, statically typed, compiled language that feels like a dynamically typed, interpreted language. For more information, see https://golang.org/.

Kubernetes use cases

As we have already touched upon in this chapter, Kubernetes can run pretty much anywhere, from just your local machine (which we will cover in our next chapter), from your on-premise hardware of virtual machine infrastructure to potential spanning hundreds of public cloud instances in AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud. In fact, you could even span multiple environments with your Kubernetes cluster.

This means that you get a consistent experience no matter where you are running your application, but also get to take advantage of your underlying platform's features, such as load balancing, persistent storage, and auto scaling, without have to really design your application to be aware it is running on, say, AWS or Microsoft Azure.

One of the common threads you will notice when reading through success stories is that people are talking about not being...

Summary

In this chapter, we spoke a lot about where Kubernetes came from and we also covered some of its use cases. We also looked at some of the basic functionality.

In the next chapter, we are going to get hands-on with Kubernetes by installing Minikube locally. Once we have our local Kubernetes installation, we will be ready to proceed to Chapter 4, Introducing Kubeless Functioning, where we will start to deploy our first serverless functions on Kubernetes.

Key benefits

  • • Get hands-on experience in installing, configuring, and using services such as Kubeless, Funktion, OpenWhisk, and Fission
  • • Learn how to launch Kubernetes both locally and in public clouds
  • • Explore the differences between using services such as AWS Lambda and Azure Functions and running your own

Description

Kubernetes has established itself as the standard platform for container management, orchestration, and deployment. It has been adopted by companies such as Google, its original developers, and Microsoft as an integral part of their public cloud platforms, so that you can develop for Kubernetes and not worry about being locked into a single vendor. This book will initially start by introducing serverless functions. Then you will configure tools such as Minikube to run Kubernetes. Once you are up-and-running, you will install and configure Kubeless, your first step towards running Function as a Service (FaaS) on Kubernetes. Then you will gradually move towards running Fission, a framework used for managing serverless functions on Kubernetes environments. Towards the end of the book, you will also work with Kubernetes functions on public and private clouds. By the end of this book, we will have mastered using Function as a Service on Kubernetes environments.

Who is this book for?

If you are a DevOps engineer, cloud architect, or a stakeholder keen to learn about serverless functions in Kubernetes environments, then this book is for you.

What you will learn

  • • Get a detailed analysis of serverless/Functions as a Service
  • • Get hands-on with installing and running tasks in Kubernetes using Minikube
  • • Install Kubeless locally and launch your first function
  • • Launch Kubernetes in the cloud and move your applications between your local machine and your cloud cluster
  • • Deploy applications on Kubernetes using Apache OpenWhisk
  • • Explore topics such as Funktion and Fission installation on the cloud followed by launching applications
  • • Monitor a serverless function and master security best practices and Kubernetes use cases

Another useless "Kubernetes" book. Apart from very brief explanation of serverless concept, it is just a compilation of poorly written installation guides for various libraries, which probably, by the time you get that book, will be out of date anyway.

If you have any feedback about the product you're reading, or Early Access in general, then please fill out a contact form here and we'll make sure the feedback gets to the right team.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter. The new chapters are automatically added to your account, so you can also check back there any time you're ready and download or read them online.

Just find the course you want to buy, go through the check-out steps, and you’ll get a confirmation email from us with information and a link to the relevant Early Access courses.

What is Early Access? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Keeping up to date with the latest technology is difficult; new versions, new frameworks, new techniques. This feature gives you a head-start to our content, as it's being created. With Early Access you'll receive each chapter as it's written, and get regular updates throughout the product's development, as well as the final course as soon as it's ready. We created Early Access as a means of giving you the information you need, as soon as it's available. As we go through the process of developing a course, 99% of it can be ready but we can't publish until that last 1% falls in to place. Early Access helps to unlock the potential of our content early, to help you start your learning when you need it most. You not only get access to every chapter as it's delivered, edited, and updated, but you'll also get the finalized, DRM-free product to download in any format you want when it's published.
