General Eisenhower, one of the finest tacticians and strategists in the history of American military leadership, and some might say in world history, makes an interesting point in the preceding quotation. He states that in preparing for battle plans are useless, but planning is indispensable. What does he mean by this? It seems counterintuitive to even contemplate that point, but he must have known what he was talking about, right? What he means is that it is impossible to plan perfectly for a battle that will be wrought with change, failures, maneuvering, and dynamism; yet, it is useful beyond measure to think about the realities of what is likely to take place and plan as thoroughly as possible in response.
