Description

Picture a home where you can adjust the lighting based on the time of day or when movement is detected. In this same home, you can also detect when a door is unexpectedly opened or an alarm is triggered in response to any suspicious activity. Such automated devices form part of a smart home, and the exciting part is that this book teaches you how to create and manage these devices all by yourself. This book helps you create your own ecosystem to automate your home using Home Assistant software. You’ll begin by understanding the components of a home automation system and learn how to create, hack, and configure them to operate seamlessly. Then, you'll set up Home Assistant on a Raspberry Pi to work as a home automation server, build your own IoT sensors based on ESP32/ESP8266, and set up real-life automation use cases using hands-on examples and projects. The chapters will also guide you in using software tools such as Node-RED, InfluxDB, and Grafana to manage, present, and use data collected from your Home Automation devices. Finally, you’ll gain insights into new technologies and trends in the home automation space to help you continue with your learning journey. By the end of this book, you’ll be able to build your own creative, IoT-based home automation system using different hardware and software technologies.

Who is this book for?

The book is for engineers, developers, students, makers, and enthusiasts who’re working on or interested in working with electronics and IoT devices, embedded systems, systems integration, computer software, and coding to develop their own smart home automation systems. Technicians, teachers, and other professionals who want to learn home automation–related technologies will also find this book useful. Prior experience of working with Raspberry Pi, creating hardware prototypes, and software programming will be beneficial.

Building Smart Home Automation Solutions with Home Assistant by Marco Carvalho provides a comprehensive introduction to the world of home automation. Using the Raspberry Pi platform and the Home Assistant software, Carvalho starts off with general descriptions of the components, including sensors, actuators, YAML, and the pieces of the communication chain (MQTT and wireless / Ethernet). He then walks the reader through the theory and implementation of several actual automation setups. The book covers customization and expansion of the basic PI/Home Assistant installation and offers a few blueprints for exercises the reader may want to use as jumping-off points for her/his own projects. Carvalho concludes with a wrap-up that provides a look at possible trends and a list of online resources for home automation implementers.Written in a conversational style with plenty of step-by step exercises, Building Smart Home Automation Solutions with Home Assistant serves as both a tutorial and a reference guide for anyone who wants to dive into learning about home process control and sensor usage. It’s suitable for the novice as well as those with some background in this topic although a bit of knowledge regarding the Pi and software basics will come in handy. Overall, this book is definitely worth a read if you want to explore the topic!

I wish I had this book in 2020 when I worked extensively on IoT projects and research.Who is this book for?- Everyone who wants to learn about IoT and Home Automation.By everyone, I mean, literally anyone who is genuinely interested. The book makes sense to a programmer as well as a non-programmer.Although I did not get a chance to build this project, the illustrations and instructions were so well organised that they kept me engaged till the end. This book provides crisp and impactful explanations to the following questions -- What is home automation?- What is "Home Assistant"?- How can I use Raspberry Pi to set up the home automation system?- Configure ESP8266-based sensors to work with Home Assistant- What is Tasmota?- What is Grafana?- Create automation, and customise IoT applications.- What is Node-RED?- And so much more!!I highly recommend this book for all IoT enthusiasts.

This book has an easy-to-read language. Both beginners and experts can use it. The author provides a thorough explanation of how to build your own home automation system. There are three practical projects you can do by yourself. A list of the hardware components, along with a price, is provided. It is good to have an estimation on how much you need to invest in your project. I acquired the information I needed to develop my own idea. I am grateful for that. The writer did a fantastic job! I really enjoyed it.
