Key benefits

  • Understand how malware evades modern security products
  • Learn to reverse engineer standard PE format program files
  • Become familiar with modern attack techniques used by multiple red teams

Description

An Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) is a severe form of cyberattack that lies low in the system for a prolonged time and locates and then exploits sensitive information. Preventing APTs requires a strong foundation of basic security techniques combined with effective security monitoring. This book will help you gain a red team perspective on exploiting system design and master techniques to prevent APT attacks. Once you’ve understood the internal design of operating systems, you’ll be ready to get hands-on with red team attacks and, further, learn how to create and compile C source code into an EXE program file. Throughout this book, you’ll explore the inner workings of how Windows systems run and how attackers abuse this knowledge to bypass antivirus products and protection. As you advance, you’ll cover practical examples of malware and online game hacking, such as EXE infection, shellcode development, software packers, UAC bypass, path parser vulnerabilities, and digital signature forgery, gaining expertise in keeping your system safe from this kind of malware. By the end of this book, you’ll be well equipped to implement the red team techniques that you've learned on a victim's computer environment, attempting to bypass security and antivirus products, to test its defense against Windows APT attacks.

Who is this book for?

This book is for cybersecurity professionals- especially for anyone working on Windows security, or malware researchers, network administrators, ethical hackers looking to explore Windows exploit, kernel practice, and reverse engineering. A basic understanding of reverse engineering and C/C++ will be helpful.

What you will learn

  • Explore various DLL injection techniques for setting API hooks
  • Understand how to run an arbitrary program file in memory
  • Become familiar with malware obfuscation techniques to evade antivirus detection
  • Discover how malware circumvents current security measures and tools
  • Use Microsoft Authenticode to sign your code to avoid tampering
  • Explore various strategies to bypass UAC design for privilege escalation

Advanced Persistent Threats and the knowledge to reverse engineer malware and recognize APT's utilizing Windows API's and malware to extract data , maintain command and control and maintain persistence in your network requires a good understanding of complex attack methodologies designed to evade even the most modern detection and security tools. This guide is absolutely the best source i have found to date to gain insight and knowledge to detect, defend and emulate APT Tactics,Techniques and Procedures.

I've taken a good amount of courses in regards to malware development and normally they give you samples of how to do something without explaining it. In the first couple of chapters I really appreciated his comparison to other tools and visualizing what you're doing with the code as well as explaining what the code is doing. My first impressions reading this book, is it's straight to the point. All the information is valuable, almost like he summarized only what's important. In a field with so many books this is hard to come by and will be appreciated. Expect to learn something new from every page, even if you've been working in Cyber Security for a good amount of time.Overall this book is excellent. I would recommend it to any serous Information Security engineer on both sides of the fence (Red and Blue).

I have been studying malware development and defense evasions recently. A lot of it involves lower level programming in C/C++ and interfacing with the Windows API. Not having a good foundation in C/C++ and even less in Windows API programming I struggled to understand a lot of research and techniques I was studying. While I could do the typically "stop and go research what you don't understand process" I had hoped to find something that would help me build that foundation more quickly.I feel that this book will allow me to build that foundation more quickly. While I haven't completed the book, I have been very satisfied based on what I've read so far. The author does a great job of conveying information without unnecessary fluff. He also provides links to further reading for those who would like a deeper understanding of a particular subject.Another reason I am so satisfied with the book is its value. I've sought resources like this and most are instructor lead courses that cost thousands of dollars. Its been nearly impossible to find something that would allow me to study at my pace and at such a low cost! I'm really excited to read the remainder of the book and continue learning.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.
