Summary

In this chapter, we covered some basic principles of masking; however, in order to edit effectively, we have to be able to do one other basic skill that relates to masking, and that is the process of selection. When masking is combined with selection, we can begin to use selection as a mask, so let’s say you have a balloon that you want to mask, you can select that balloon and then save it for later work.

In this chapter, we learned the three principles of masking and the two most powerful and frequently used techniques on how to mask, the simple brush-on and the vector clipping mask. This is important knowledge as we will begin to stack basic skills one on top of the other, and that is why the book is written the way it is, so keep going and combining all the new knowledge in each chapter. The masks build on the layers, which build on the idea of a pixel-based system.
