SQL Server security settings


Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2016 can run on the SQL Server, and smaller installations can also run on SQL Server Express. It is vital to understand the requirements of the client in the first place. It is recommended to use the following steps to help increase SQL Server security:

  • Always make sure that the latest operating system and SQL Server service packs and updates are installed.

  • For filesystem-level security, make sure all SQL Server data and system files are installed on NTFS partitions. Also make sure to make the files accessible only to administrative or system-level users through NTFS permissions. It safeguards against users trying to access those files when the MSSQLSERVER service is not running.

  • Use a low-privilege domain account such as NT AuthorityNetwork Service (recommended), or the local system account for the SQL Server service (MSSQLSERVER or SQLEXPRESS). This account should have only local user-level permissions in the domain.
