Message tracing – unveiling the mystery of your emails
Message tracing allows you to track the path an email takes within your Microsoft 365 environment, from sender to recipient. This valuable tool comes in handy for diverse scenarios, offering crucial insights into email delivery, troubleshooting problems, and investigating incidents (Microsoft, 2023c). To use this tool, follow these steps:
- Visit the Exchange admin center (admin.exchange.microsoft.com).
- On the left-hand menu, inside the Mail flow section, you will see Message trace. Click on it.
The Message trace page will open with the following options: Default queries, Custom queries, Autosaved queries, and Downloadable reports.
By default, the tool includes some queries for the most common scenarios where message tracing is needed. These default queries are variations of values in the following fields:
