Summary

Governments typically pledge to provide their citizens with national security, law enforcement, judicial systems, and other essential functions that provide security and support citizens’ pursuit of happiness. To do this, governments organize themselves into different departments, ministries, and agencies. In this chapter we explored the different roles governments play in providing cybersecurity for their citizens and some real-world examples of how they do this.

The roles governments play in cybersecurity include market participants, standards bodies, enforcers, and defenders. We examined each of these roles in this chapter.

Governments are market participants in that they have purchasing power in markets for cybersecurity products, services, and professional services. They also compete for cybersecurity talent with the private sector.
