Introducing an energy consumption time series
In this section, we'll introduce the energy consumption time series that we'll use to demonstrate visualization techniques of time series data. The data is characterized by seasonal patterns and autocorrelation, about which the line plot, lag plot, seasonal plot, and box plot show different details.
The regular behavior of the time series is exposed to the raw energy consumption data by preprocessing and clustering it, as we'll explain in the following subsections.
Describing raw energy consumption data
The raw energy consumption data originates from 6,000 households and businesses in Ireland, and it was collected by smart meters that record energy consumption every half an hour in kilowatts (kW) between July 2009 and August 2010. The original data contains three columns: a timestamp, an identifier (ID) of the household, and the energy consumption.
