ArcGIS for Desktop Cookbook

Chapter 2. Editing Data

In this chapter, we will cover the following topics:

  • Editing features in a geodatabase
  • Advanced editing in a geodatabase
  • Creating geodatabase topology
  • Editing geodatabase topology

Introduction

In the first part of this chapter, you will test different ArcGIS tools in order to add different types of feature geometry and their attribute values.

In Chapter 1, Designing Geodatabase, you constrained the attribute values using subtypes and domains. With the Validation option in an edit session, you can identify the invalid values in order to correct them.

You will continue to use the concept of validation in the feature geometry context in the second part of this chapter. You will constrain and administrate the spatial relationships between features with geodatabase topology. With the geodatabase topology, you will identify and fix the spatial errors from your Topo5k.gdb file geodatabase.

Editing features in a geodatabase

In ArcMap, a layer references the spatial datasets (for example, feature class and raster) that contain features with common geometry and attributes. A layer uses the dataset attributes to represent the features by one or more symbols. By default, a layer symbolizes features from a feature class using the subtype field.

The editing session in ArcGIS for Desktop is based on layers. When you start an edit session, you have to define the Feature Template that describes the type of feature that you intend to create. ArcGIS creates feature templates by default, based on the layer symbology. In the Creating Feature window, you can see the list of feature templates. You can create new types of features with the Organize Feature Templates option. Moreover, you can define a default attribute for one type of feature or for all types of features from a layer. When you create a new feature, the default attribute is automatically inherited. Choosing a default value works...

Advanced editing in a geodatabase

The Advanced Editing toolbar offers tools to reshape and replace geometry, correct the overshoot or undershoot errors, split line features in intersection, divide a line or curve based on specified lengths or percentages, and edit multipart features.

The COGO toolbar allows you to work with COoordinate GeOmetry. Coordinate geometry refers to directions or bearings, angles, and horizontal distances that generally came from a topographic survey and that describe a series of consecutive lines. Those lines can be straight lines or simple curves and are named as courses or 2-point line. A course has only two vertices. The survey measurements that describe the courses can be stored in a traverse file in the context of ArcGIS. From the topography point of view, a traverse is a classical method for a detail topographic survey of an area. In ArcGIS, in a closed traverse, the consecutive lines start from a known point and end at the same or another known point. In...

Creating geodatabase topology

In a map, topology refers to spatial relationships between features, such as:

  • Connectivity: This indicates that rivers from the WatercourseL feature class or roads from the RoadL feature class should be connected
  • Coincidence: This indicates that the water and roads from the Watercourse and Road polygon feature classes should be covered by the Hydrography and Transportation subtypes from the LandUse feature class
  • Adjacency: This indicates that parcels from LandUse have common edges and should not overlap or have gaps
  • Containment: This indicates that buildings from the Buildings feature class should be within the Other Terrain (Built-up area) subtype from the LandUse feature class

In the ArcGIS context, a topology is a collection of rules that define the spatial relationship between features within a feature class or between features of two or more feature classes belonging to the same feature dataset.

A topology is stored in a file geodatabase as an individual File...

Editing geodatabase topology

It's very important to have a comprehensive understanding of our dataset and the spatial relationships between features before choosing the right rules for a topology and the right solution to correct the errors. When you inspect the error, firstly identify the features involved, secondly understand what is causing the error from a geometrical point of view, and thirdly use the proper solution. There are different solutions to the same error:

  • Use a predefined fix
  • Combine a predefined fix with manual edits
  • Manually edit features

Note

For more details about the editing topology, please refer to the online ArcGIS Help (10.2) by navigating to Desktop | Editing | Editing topology at http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.2.

Getting ready

In this section, we will display the topology layer in ArcMap, and test different methods to fix the topology errors identified in the previous recipe.

The main steps in editing a topology are:

  1. Open the topology in ArcMap.
  2. Symbolize...

The directions are error ridden and the example data often does not yield correct results when the directions are followed (this was experienced by everyone in my class so it was not due to error) which results in nothing but frustration.

If you have any feedback about the product you're reading, or Early Access in general, then please fill out a contact form here and we'll make sure the feedback gets to the right team.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter. The new chapters are automatically added to your account, so you can also check back there any time you're ready and download or read them online.

I am a Packt subscriber, do I get Early Access? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Yes, all Early Access content is fully available through your subscription. You will need to have a paid for or active trial subscription in order to access all titles.

How do I buy Early Access content? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Early Access is a way of us getting our content to you quicker, but the method of buying the Early Access course is still the same. Just find the course you want to buy, go through the check-out steps, and you’ll get a confirmation email from us with information and a link to the relevant Early Access courses.

What is Early Access? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Keeping up to date with the latest technology is difficult; new versions, new frameworks, new techniques. This feature gives you a head-start to our content, as it's being created. With Early Access you'll receive each chapter as it's written, and get regular updates throughout the product's development, as well as the final course as soon as it's ready. We created Early Access as a means of giving you the information you need, as soon as it's available. As we go through the process of developing a course, 99% of it can be ready but we can't publish until that last 1% falls in to place. Early Access helps to unlock the potential of our content early, to help you start your learning when you need it most. You not only get access to every chapter as it's delivered, edited, and updated, but you'll also get the finalized, DRM-free product to download in any format you want when it's published.
