Using common tools
There are three main classes of geoprocessing tools:
- Data extraction (for example, clip and select)
- Overlay (for example, intersect and spatial join)
- Proximity (for example, buffer and point distance)
With geoprocessing tools, we can perform geoprocessing operations. The geoprocessing operations are used to obtain new feature classes or nonspatial tables for a specific analysis.
Getting ready
In this exercise, we will perform an analysis to identify the possible consequences of creating a cycling infrastructure on Dacia Avenue, taking into account the existing road network, as shown in the following image:
Both sides of the street contain the following elements:
- One 2-meter-wide footway for pedestrians' movements
- Two 3.2-meter-wide lanes for moving and stationary vehicles
- One 2-meter median used to separate the roadway from the cycling infrastructure
- One 1.7 meter cycle lane
