Designing for data residency requirements
The cloud is a global resource that expands your company footprint well beyond the native country of origin. However, with these expanded capabilities to create resources to get closer to your users, there is a challenge in regulations as it pertains to data sovereignty and data residency.
Based on government and privacy requirements, some countries have very strict rules and guidelines for how data is handled. The location where data is used and processed is data residency. Data sovereignty introduces the rules that are applied at the country or local government level on how data is handled.
When designing resources within the cloud, you need to understand the local jurisdiction for the regions where these resources are deployed. Not adhering to local standards could create a level of legal liability.
