Hands-On Cloud Development with WildFly

Getting Familiar with WildFly Swarm

In this chapter, we will cover WildFly—how it relates to Java EE and its main features. We will introduce WildFly Swarm—WildFly's child project—describe its purpose, and show how it can be used to develop microservices. We will create and deploy our first application using Swarm.

Introducing WildFly

Most of you have probably heard about JBoss Application Server; WildFly is its successor. It is an open source implementation of the Java EE specification, and, more importantly in the context of this book, it is the base of Swarm project.

WildFly has an extensible architecture, which enables building differently sized distributions on top of its high-performance core, which, as we will learn in the next chapter, is utilized by Swarm to a great extent.

Performance

When you hear the phrase Java EE application server, the first thing that may come to your mind is the word heavyweight, as this is the way in which application servers are often described. It's worth noting however that the Java EE specification...

Meet WildFly Swarm

As we discussed earlier, the application server provides the possibility to deploy and manage multiple applications within the same instance. Also, the Java EE-compliant application server provides an implementation of all specifications gathered around Java EE umbrella so that each application that conforms to it can use it.

Such a functionality is not necessary for all application architectures. In services developed in our example application, we might not care much about management, hot redeployment, and support for all Java EE libraries. The reason for that is that we will be developing small focused microservices. If a microservice is updated, we can just kill its container and restart its new version. Also, at the time of service creation, we will be able to determine all the libraries that it will use during its operations. Because of that, we will be...

Summary

The goal of this chapter was to introduce you to WildFly Swarm—to put it in the context of WildFly, its parent project, show its architecture, features, and benefits. Finally, to give you your first taste of WildFly Swarm, we created a simple web application and used Swarm to create a microservice from it. In the next chapter, we will learn more about the modular nature of WildFly Swarm.

Key benefits

  • • Create functional microservices with WildFly Swarm
  • • Use OpenShift to deploy your microservices in the cloud
  • • Make your application production-ready using Jenkins, Hystrix, and Keycloak

Description

The book starts by introducing you to WildFly Swarm—a tool that allows you to create runnable microservices from Java EE components. You’ll learn the basics of Swarm operation—creating microservices containing only the parts of enterprise runtime needed in a specific case. Later, you’ll learn how to configure and test those services. In order to deploy our services in the cloud, we’ll use OpenShift. You’ll get to know basic information on its architecture, features, and relationship to Docker and Kubernetes. Later, you’ll learn how to deploy and configure your services to run in the OpenShift cloud. In the last part of the book, you’ll see how to make your application production-ready. You’ll find out how to configure continuous integration for your services using Jenkins, make your application resistant to network failures using Hystrix, and how to secure them using Keycloak. By the end of the book, you’ll have a functional example application and will have practical knowledge of Java EE cloud development that can be used as a reference in your other projects.

Who is this book for?

If you're an experienced developer familiar with Java EE technologies and would like to learn how you can use those technologies in the cloud with WildFly and OpenShift, then this book is for you.

What you will learn

  • • Utilize Java EE technology to develop modern cloud-enabled applications
  • • Easily create microservices with WildFly Swarm using proven Java EE technologies
  • • See the benefits of OpenShift – easy deployment of your services, out of the box scalability and healing, and integration with Continuous Integration tools
  • • Integrate the sample application with Jenkins' Continuous Integration server
  • • Utilize Hystrix to provide resilience? to your application
  • • Provide security to your application using Keycloak

After reading this book, readers will be able to build a complete microservices application that can be deployed, scaled, and secured in a container orchestration platform. I really loved this book as it not only talks about WildFly Swarm and how it can be enhanced with its Fractions, but it also talks about how to perform a deployment of complete microservices application in OpenShift/Kubernetes. After that, it will cover things that are more related to DevOps practices also as CI/CD Pipelines using Jenkins. Security is also covered with Keycloak, and resilience with Hystrix. Finally it gives an overview of the future direction talking about Jakarta EE and Microprofile.

This book is a nice tour of contemporary tools used by the Java cloud developer. The reader is introduced to a wide range of technologies that are useful for developing microservices and deploying them on OpenShift. Each technology visited (JEE, Wildfly Swarm, Arquillian, OpenShift, Jenkins, Keycloak, Hystrix) is given enough overview to let the user know why such a technology might be used, then enough information to apply a 'happy path' use case as a sample is built. Any one of those technologies could be the subject of an entire book, so it's understandable that every option and feature is not covered-- you are given the 'why' and one solid 'how' for each. This is a great book for any Java developer transitioning to cloud computing and microservices. If you're in the Enterprise Java workspace, this book will give you a good foundation for understanding where the industry is going.
