About This BookThis book can be considered the manual for WordPress 5. It covers nearly anything you need to know to run a site using the latest version of the software, from setting up to selling product. It will get you past the bumps in the road with troubleshooting tips and help you monetize your site.Who is This For?From the Preface, the author wrote this book for any web developer who wants to run a WordPress site or a more advanced web developer who wants to use WordPress functionality on their own site. They recommend that the reader know PHP, HTML, and CSS. Later in the preface, the author also recommends that you know some JavaScript.From my perspective, this is a good book for anyone with a basic understanding of software or web development who wants their own WordPress site, though a web design background would be helpful. I plan to use this book to better setup and improve my own WordPress site in the coming months.Why Was This Written?WordPress powers a strong minority (around 30%) of websites. It is an easy way to get started as a blogger or with an e-commerce site. This book is a great manual for anyone who wants to do either or any other use of the WordPress system. As I have not seen many other WordPress books (I admit I haven't really looked for them lately), this fills a void, and does it well.OrganizationThere is no overarching organization, which I normally look for, but this also isn't a book to learn from. It's a cookbook, where each chapter has a list of related recipes, or common issues or features, which shows you how to do one thing well. Within each recipe, you have a few sections that prepare for the recipe, how to use the feature or process, how it works internally, and sometimes a bit extra to extend the feature even more.Did This Book Succeed?I think the author did an amazing job with this book. They are clearly knowledgeable with the WordPress system and know what people might need to use. The prose is clear with screenshots showing every step. Everything is very clear and the recipes chosen are extremely useful to a wide range of readers.Rating and Final ThoughtsThis is a great book. It earns an easy 5 out of 5. It is very useful for anyone using WordPress. With this book, you will get your website up and running very quickly. I thank the author for writing this.

Wordpress is quite popular website building platforms. The rapid development of the platform leads to the need for a regular release of books about it. The collection of recipes is one such book.The recipes given in the first chapters are quite obvious for a more or less trained user. But the most important thing is in the sections "How it works ..." and "There's more ...", which describes exactly what changes at the file and database level take place, when you set certain settings in the administrative panel. In practice, this information is needed if the configured setting does not work - you can quickly check whether changes have occurred at a low level.Some recipes mention the use of third party plugins. I don't know how justified it is - plugins may no longer be supported by their authors. On the other hand, plugins are an integral part of the Wordpress ecosystem, and a book would be incomplete without mentioning Woocommerce.In the given pieces of code, I did not find unnecessary characters (spaces, tabs, etc.), so they can be copied directly from the e-book. This speaks about the good work of the author and editors.The undoubted merit of this book is that new opportunities can be found. Usually, developers search the Internet for solutions to those problems that they have already encountered. In the book, under one cover, you can find unexpected opportunities, which is very good for professional development.It would be nice if the recipes in the Cookbook series were continuously numbered inside the book. This would make internal links easier to read, just mention the number.Since the book is aimed at intermediate users, no doubt Chapter 7 (WordPress as an Application Framework) will help them get to the advanced level of work. For example, until now I have used Django as an application framework, but I will try to develop in Wordpress.
