Planning for your dashboards


During my interaction with customers, I learned that there are two types of dashboards:

  • The first kind is for management purposes, be it to manage performance, capacity, availability, health, configuration, or compliance

  • The second kind is for troubleshooting purposes, the use of which is normally triggered by performance issues

In a virtual environment, performance management and performance troubleshooting are relatively more distinct from each other than they are in a traditional physical environment. As resources are shared, performance management becomes more important to reduce the need to troubleshoot often. Here is a breakdown of the differences between performance management and performance troubleshooting:

  • Troubleshooting means you currently have or you had a problem. Even if the problem is no longer active, you normally need to know what caused it. Management, on the other hand, is about preventing the problem in the first place. Troubleshooting is about...
