Troubleshooting Citrix XenApp??

Chapter 2. Understanding the Citrix® Components

In this chapter, you will understand the individual components and interactions required for a successful XenApp environment, which will aid in troubleshooting and finding the source of issues.

The following topics will be covered in this chapter:

  • Identifying components and roles
  • Understanding components and how they interact
  • Communication channels

Identifying components and roles

As of XenApp 7.5/7.6, there are several components we need to take into consideration when troubleshooting issues. Citrix administrators who have worked with previous versions of XenApp will find that some of the components have changed significantly after XenApp was moved to the FlexCast Management Architecture (FMA). With the older Independent Management Architecture (IMA) being dropped in favor of FlexCast, some of the core concepts have changed; farms are now called delivery sites, delivery controllers have replaced zone and data collectors, and worker groups have been replaced by session machine catalogs and delivery groups. The Citrix data store, which previously would use Microsoft Access database, is now a proper Microsoft SQL Server database.

We will discuss the following components of a XenApp site:

  • Database
  • Delivery controller
  • License server
  • Studio
  • Virtual delivery agent
  • Hypervisor
  • StoreFront
  • Receiver
  • NetScaler Gateway

The database component

A major rewrite...

Component interaction

To understand how the different XenApp/XenDesktop components interact, it is important to first understand the XenDesktop FlexCast Management Architecture (FMA) and the easiest way to do this is to highlight the main steps taken when starting a published application or desktop.

The following steps assume XenDesktop 7.5/7.6 is used together with Citrix StoreFront and/or NetScaler Gateway. The scenario where web interface is used instead of StoreFront is not taken into account:

  1. The user initiates the connection using Citrix Receiver or a browser; ports 80 or 443 are used for the communication. The connection is made to the StoreFront or to the NetScaler Gateway if the user is external.

If the user is authenticating against a NetScaler Gateway (an external user), then the NetScaler validates the user against Active Directory using port 389 and forwards the validated user credentials to the Citrix StoreFront on port 443.

  2. StoreFront will authenticate the user by connecting...

Communication channels

While XenDesktop/XenApp uses a large number of ports to communicate between components, the most common ones are:

  • Ports 80/443 used by Receiver to connect to StoreFront
  • Port 1494 when the ICA/HDX protocol starts
  • Port 2598 for Session reliability (if enabled)
  • Ports 80/8080/443 for the XML service and 2513 for the Citrix Management console

The following table illustrates the complete list of ports used by XenApp/XenDesktop 7.5 and later:

Summary

In this chapter, we identified the components that are part of the XenDesktop/XenApp infrastructure and briefly discussed the role of each component in a site deployment and how they interact with each other.

To better understand where each component is used, we described the process of starting a published application and how each component comes into play.

We discussed the two main scenarios—accessing resources in an internal network and accessing resources externally using NetScaler Gateway.

We mentioned the communication channels (protocols and ports) used by the main components such as Receiver, the ICA/HDX protocols, and we provided the full list of ports and protocols used by the XenDesktop/XenApp services.

In the next chapter, we will discuss specific issues around XenApp/XenDesktop and StoreFront and learn how to identify and resolve them.

Great coverage on Citrix XenApp, I used XenServer extensively and this book really helps in a pinch. If you're looking for support and unwilling to pay the high rates, then this book will help you out a lot if you're willing to put for the effort. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is not afraid to get hands on. Application performance, refactoring, and monitoring are all covered nicely with this title as well.
