System Center 2016 Virtual Machine Manager Cookbook

Upgrading from Previous Versions

In this chapter, we will cover the following topics:

  • Reviewing the upgrade options
  • Checking the VMM system requirements and preparing for the upgrade
  • Upgrading to VMM 2016
  • Re-associating hosts after upgrading
  • Updating the VMM agents
  • Performing other post-upgrade tasks

Introduction

This chapter is about guiding you through the requirements and steps to upgrade older VMM versions to VMM 2016. We will start from the VMM 2008 R2 SP1 and end on current VMM 2016.

There is no direct upgrade path from VMM 2008 R2 SP1 or VMM 2012 to VMM 2016. You must first upgrade VMM 2008 R2 to VMM 2012, and then to VMM 2012 R2. VMM 2008 R2 SP1 -> VMM 2012 -> SCVMM 2012 SP1 -> VMM 2012 R2 -> VMM 2016 is the correct upgrade path.

The main reasons for upgrading might be different:

  • Evaluation copy has expired and you need to re-install or upgrade VMM:
  • New functionality and the necessity of managing hosts running on a newer version of Windows Server or ESXi. You can't manage, for instance, Windows Server 2016 hosts in VMM 2012 R2.
  • Product life cycle is coming to an end. Knowing the life cycle of your existing VMM helps you plan the upgrade and other...

Reviewing the upgrade options

This recipe will guide you through the upgrade options for VMM 2016. Keep in mind that there is no direct upgrade path from VMM 2008 R2 or VMM 2012 to VMM 2016.

How to do it...

Read through the following recommendations in order to upgrade your current VMM installation.

In-place upgrade from VMM 2008 R2 SP1 to VMM 2012

Use this method if your system meets the requirements for a VMM 2012 upgrade and
you want to deploy it on the same server. The supported VMM version to upgrade from is VMM 2008 R2 SP1. If you need to upgrade VMM 2008 R2 to VMM...

Checking the VMM system requirements and preparing for the upgrade

This recipe will guide you through the steps required to check whether your current VMM installation meets the requirements for an upgrade to a newer VMM. The recipe will also help you with the initial steps that need to be carried out in order to prepare the environment for a VMM in-place upgrade.

Getting ready

Confirm that your system meets the requirements. If you have VMM 2012 R2 and your target is VMM 2016, see the Supported OS and Servers section of the Specifying the correct system requirements for a real-world scenario recipe in Chapter 1, VMM 2016 Architecture.

If you have two or more upgrades in a row, check the requirements for each VMM before going...

Upgrading to VMM 2016

This recipe will guide you through the tasks required to upgrade VMM 2008 R2 SP1 to VMM 2012, showcasing the possible options and actions. It will then highlight the upgrade path to VMM 2016 in detail.

For VMM 2012 R2 to 2016, see the Upgrading from VMM 2012 R2 to VMM 2016 section in this recipe.

Getting ready

Go through the Checking the VMM system requirements and preparing for the upgrade recipe after deciding the upgrade method (in-place upgrade or upgrade to another server), and make sure you've installed all of the prerequisites.

If you're planning an in-place upgrade of VMM 2008 R2 SP1 running on a server with an OS other than the supported version, first upgrade the OS, and then carry...

Re-associating hosts after upgrading

After upgrading to a new version of VMM, you might need to re-associate the Hyper-V hosts. This recipe will guide you through the steps required to do so.

How to do it...

To re-associate hosts and library servers, carry out the following steps after upgrading VMM:

  1. In the Fabric workspace on the VMM console, expand Servers. Under Servers, expand All Hosts. In the Hosts pane, right-click on the column header and select Agent Status.
If a host needs to be re-associated, the Host Status column will display Needs Attention and the Agent Status column will display Access Denied.

Select the host(s) to re-associate (use the Shift or the Ctrl key if you need to select multiple hosts), then right...

Updating the VMM agents

After upgrading to a new version of VMM, you will also need to update the VMM agents running on the Hyper-V server hosts. This recipe will guide you through the steps.

How to do it...

To update the VMM agent of a host, carry out the following steps after upgrading:

  1. In the Fabric workspace on the VMM console, expand Servers and then go to All Hosts. In the Hosts pane, right-click on the column header and select Agent Status.
  2. On the Hosts tab in the ribbon, click on Refresh.
If a host requires the VMM agent to be updated, it will display Needs Attention in the Host Status column and Upgrade Available in the Agent Version Status column.
  1. To update the VMM agent, select and right-click on the host, and...

Performing other post-upgrade tasks

There are some others tasks that need to be performed after VMM upgrading. This recipe will guide you through them.

How to do it...

To update a VM template, carry out the following steps after upgrading VMM:

  1. On the VMM console, in the Library workspace, expand Templates and click on VM Templates.
  2. In the Templates pane, right-click on the VM template that is to be updated and select Properties.
  1. On the Hardware Configuration page, configure the following:
    • VLAN ID: If previously configured in a hardware profile
In VMM 2012 and later, the VLAN ID will be resolved automatically based on the logical network specified when deploying a VM from a template.
    • Logical Network/VM Network: Ensure...

I like that author showed alot of PowerShell and automation, converged networks desription, server clustering and storage examples based on real world experience. First chapters little overloaded, because showed almost all possible scenarios of VMM deployment and upgrade. I'm very excited about shielded VMs in Chapter 6. Finally, I understood how to configure them! In my opinion this book is the best edition in the series.

I appreciate to get this book as my desk book. It's very useful if you doesn't work with VMM every day. Good structure for every feature: good overview, how to do it step by step, where to get more information. Moreover the book provide all information about guarded fabric in VMM which you can use to increase security in your project. Plus, all information provided by simple language. I would like to recommend the book for guys who start to learn VMM or who doesn't work with VMM every day.

Great read but hard to follow in some instances. There are lab exercises that I just could not perform by following the instructions in the book. One of the biggest problems is that this hard copy book has instructions that assumes the book is digital, like on page 101 when it asks you to "Open notepad and copy the following into a new file" then gives you a script for automating sql server deployment... Of course I installed SQL by clicking around. Then there is page 224 on deploying a network controller. I am looking at the script and SVC01\Root-CA just conveniently pops up out of nowhere. Of course I re-typed the script and ran it, (I created my own CA), but did not get very far... this was not very helpful. Overall, the book is very informative but too often omits the seemingly minor details that are crucial to the success of a lab. I am still in search of another book to supplement this one.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.
