Data privacy regulations and laws
To help protect personal privacy, many regulations and laws have been enacted around the world. One of the biggest laws in the EU is the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This gives EU consumers several rights related to their data privacy, such as the right to be informed about data collection being performed on them, the right to request a copy of the data collected on them, rights to rectify and erase data, and a few others.
Importantly, users must give consent before data can be collected on them, such as cookies and IP addresses collected from visiting websites. Additionally, any company that suffers a data breach must notify consumers and their supervisory authority within 72 hours.
The US does not have a nationwide law on data privacy at the time of writing, but a few states have enacted legislation, such as New York's SHIELD Act, Virginia's Consumer Data Protection Act (CDPA), the California Consumer Privacy Act...
