Key benefits

  • Create and organize well-structured Go microservices
  • Learn industry best practices and gain insights into Go microservice development tools, patterns, and solutions
  • Cover hands-on Golang examples in each chapter

Description

This book covers the key benefits and common issues of microservices, helping you understand the problems microservice architecture helps to solve, the issues it usually introduces, and the ways to tackle them. You’ll start by learning about the importance of using the right principles and standards in order to achieve the key benefits of microservice architecture. The following chapters will explain why the Go programming language is one of the most popular languages for microservice development and lay down the foundations for the next chapters of the book. You’ll explore the foundational aspects of Go microservice development including service scaffolding, service discovery, data serialization, synchronous and asynchronous communication, deployment, and testing. After covering the development aspects, you’ll progress to maintenance and reliability topics. The last part focuses on more advanced topics of Go microservice development including system reliability, observability, maintainability, and scalability. In this part, you’ll dive into the best practices and examples which illustrate how to apply the key ideas to existing applications, using the services scaffolded in the previous part as examples. By the end of this book, you’ll have gained hands-on experience with everything you need to develop scalable, reliable and performant microservices using Go.

This book is a comprehensive guide to building microservices in Golang from scratch. It covers all the essential topics, such as the foundations of a service, different communication methods, protocols, databases, deployments, and testing. The most appealing aspect of this book is the author's skill in explaining these topics using intuitive examples. The connections between the examples enhance our understanding and make the learning process more effective. Overall, I highly recommend this book if you are interested in learning how to build microservices from the ground up, utilizing all the fundamental components of a microservice architecture.

Cover multiple topics on implementing services in Go. The book starts with the definition of a micro-service and the advantages and disadvantages of micro-service architecture.Later the book covers advanced topics like serialization, synchronous versus asynchronous calls, and service discovery types. The book requires some preexisting knowledge and programming experience, and it could be hard to read for beginners. At the same time, the book could be useful for the people preparing for design interviews as the book describes most of the design topics, including service maintenance, monitoring, and alerting. The book provides examples with source code.

Having read many other books on the Golang programming language, I have not yet come across such a well-systematized book about microservices on Golang. This book well describes the pros and cons of microservices and when they should be used. The correct structure of the project, various serialization formats, such as Apache Thrift, Protocol Buffers, synchronous interaction, asynchronous interaction on the example of Apache Kafka, data storage in a database are analyzed in detail. The author has not bypassed Unit and integration testing. Integration testing is especially important to ensure reliable interaction of distributed microservices. Of course, do not forget that the reliability of microservices primarily depends on the quality of the code and the correct handling of all possible errors of interaction with other services, these concepts are discussed in the chapter "Reliability Overview". No modern information system is now unthinkable without monitoring the telemetry of microservices, two chapters are devoted to this! Each chapter contains a section of best practices and links to in-depth material! If you have already learned the basics of Golang and want to plunge into the world of microservices, I recommend this book for mandatory reading and applying the acquired skills in your projects!

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon
