Mathematica data visualization

Chapter 2. Dissecting Data Using Mathematica

We will go through a series of lessons in this chapter that will teach us the programming essentials to load, manipulate, and analyze different kinds of data. This will pave the way for the next few chapters on more advanced visualization techniques and tools. It is highly recommended that you try out and play with the code provided in the support section of the book's web page to understand the underlying concepts introduced in this chapter. Mathematica is a rich programming language that provides many functions to achieve miscellaneous tasks. We will only focus on the concepts and functions that are useful for our purpose. These lessons can be considered as a crash course on data manipulation and basic visualization using Mathematica, so buckle up and enjoy the ride!

Data structures and core languages

In the language of computer science, in order to handle any type of data, we need to load it in a convenient fashion in the memory. The constructs used to store data in the memory are called data structures. For most traditional programming languages, a programmer has to think and decide the right data structure to load and store the data, but Mathematica makes the work easy for us by providing a powerful core data structure that can be used in many different ways.

Lists are the fundamental and most useful data structure to load, manipulate, and store data in Mathematica. They provide a lot of flexibility for handling and representing different kinds of datasets. At the same time, they are simple enough that one can focus on the analysis instead of spending a lot of time coding or figuring out the right data structure to use.

Introducing lists

In order to create a new list and assign it to a list object, we simply use the expression {} (which means an empty...

Data importing and basic plots

Equipped with a crash course on the Mathematica programming language, we can really start having some fun with data. The rest of the chapter will teach us how to load simple datasets and plot some values. We will learn about a few different kinds of plots and the methods of styling and customizing them.

Importing data into Mathematica

Mathematica provides a very rich data importing and exporting suite. The two commonly used functions to load data into a worksheet are Import and ReadList. In this section, we will use Import to load a dataset into Mathematica and plot it. We will style our plot, and explore some features of plotting functions that are useful.

SetDirectory[] and NotebookDirectory[]

To load our dataset, we need to tell Mathematica where to look for it. The structure of the code and data provided in the accompanying book's website follow the same pattern for every chapter. Under each chapter folder, there is a folder called data. The folder chapter2...

The Mathematica Journal is a free journal with a wonderful community where experts and intermediate users share their thoughts and tips on programming with Mathematica. Interested readers can access the current and previous volumes in the following link: http://www.mathematica-journal.com/.

Mathematica has loads of functions that are used to manipulate lists. The same goes for the amazing number of options it offers to customize our plots. We will cover some more plots in the upcoming chapters, but we cannot possibly list every feature and function. Our goal is to learn visualization by developing some small projects. An introductory book that introduces Mathematica programming to beginners is Programming with Mathematica by Paul Wellin. The Mathematica documentation is a very good resource to find all the plotting options and their usage. Other useful list-manipulation techniques are also described in several tutorials in the documentation. When in doubt, or if you simply...

Summary

In this chapter, we have learned the basics of Mathematica programming that are essential for data loading and manipulation. Some frequently used list operations are described, along with the basics of functions and conditionals. We encounter numerical datasets for the first time in the book, using Import to load the datasets into Mathematica. The datasets are visualized using the ListPlot, ListPointPlot3D, and ListLogPlot commands. We have also learned about some basic styling of our plots. In the next chapter, we will look at more ways to visualize time series data, and get a taste of visualizing some commonly used scientific data formats.

Great data visualization tool and well worth the cost. I specifically liked the geospatial element, which I never would have guessed was in Mathematica. Expanded my use exponentially (sorry about the math reference, but I had to take it).
