Mastering OpenStack

Deploying OpenStack - The DevOps Way

"Besides black art, there is only automation and mechanization."
- Federico Garcia Lorca

Deploying an OpenStack environment based on the profiled design, as shown in the previous chapter, is not simple. Although we created our design by taking care of several aspects related to scalability and performance, we still have to make it real. If you are still looking at OpenStack as a single block system, you should take a step back and recheck what was explained in Chapter 1, Designing OpenStack Cloud Architectural Consideration. Furthermore, in the introductory section of this book, we covered the role of OpenStack in the next generation of data centers. A large-scale infrastructure used by cloud providers with a few thousand servers needs a very different approach to setup.

In our case, deploying...

DevOps in a nutshell

The term DevOps is a conjunction of development (software developers) and operations (manage and put software into production). Many IT organizations have started to adopt such a concept, but the question is how and why? Is it a job? Is it a process or a practice?

DevOps is development and operations compounded, which basically defines a methodology of software development. It describes practices that streamline the software delivery process. It is about raising communication and integration between developers, operators (including administrators), and quality assurance teams. The essence of the DevOps movement lies in leveraging the benefits of collaboration. Different disciplines can relate to DevOps in different ways, and bring their experiences and skills together under the DevOps banner to gain shared values.

So, DevOps is a methodology that integrates the efforts of several disciplines...

Choosing the automation tool

At first sight, you may wonder which automation tool is the most useful for our OpenStack production day. We have already chosen Git and Jenkins to handle our continuous integration and testing. It is time to choose the right tool for automation.

It might be difficult to select the right tool. Most likely, you'll have to choose between several of them. Covering all the existing IT automation tools could fill an entire book or even books. Therefore, giving succinct hints on different tools might be helpful in order to distinguish the best outfit for certain particular setups. Of course, we are still talking about large infrastructures, a lot of networking, and distributed services.

As Ansible becomes a very mature tool and well integrated within the cloud automation world, we will use it for the next deployment phase.

...

Summary

In this chapter, we covered several topics and terminologies on how to develop and maintain a code infrastructure using the DevOps style.

Viewing your OpenStack infrastructure deployment as code will not only simplify node configuration, but also improve the automation process.

You should keep in mind that DevOps is neither a project nor a goal, but a methodology that will make your deployment successfully empowered by using team synergy with different departments.

Despite the existence of numerous system management tools to bring our OpenStack up and running in an automated way, we have chosen Ansible for the automation of our infrastructure.

Puppet, Chef, Salt, and others can do the job, but in different ways. You should know that there isn't one way to perform automation. Both Puppet and Chef have their own OpenStack deployment projects under the OpenStack Big Tent.

At the end of the day, you can...

You'll get an understanding about the segregation of compute nodes based on reliability and availability needs. We'll cover various storage types in OpenStack and advanced networking aspects such as SDN and NFV. Next, you'll understand the OpenStack infrastructure from a cloud user point of view. Moving on, you'll develop troubleshooting skills, and get a comprehensive understanding of services such as high availability and failover in OpenStack. Finally, you will gain experience of running a centralized logging server and monitoring OpenStack services. The book will show you how to carry out performance tuning based on OpenStack service logs. You will be able to master OpenStack benchmarking and performance tuning. By the end of the book, you'll be ready to take steps to deploy and manage an OpenStack cloud with the latest open source technologies.

Who is this book for?

The general quality of the book and writing is to an excellent standard. Its also a pity that there are no online code snippets making for easy copy/pasting.The images, however, leave much to be desired. I found them grainy and blocky (some you can barely make out) - not at all what is expected of a book at a premium price. (I've since learnt from Packt that Amazon prints the book on demand - this image issue looks to be a result of printing the colour images in black & white - the images are clear and in colour when seen through the 'Look Inside' feature)
